George W. Bush Horror Movie & Tickle Me Elmo Top The Black List 2024

As a seasoned cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt and a particular fondness for the macabre, I must say that 2024 is shaping up to be a truly exhilarating year at the cinema. The Black List’s latest offerings have managed to both surprise and delight me in equal measure.

Over the coming years, the movie industry could become quite thrilling. The Black List is a website where aspiring screenwriters showcase their work, and annually they compile a list of the most sought-after unproduced screenplays to draw potential producers’ attention. This year, 2024, has already been action-packed with blockbusters like “Gladiator II” and “Wicked” clashing, Mubi’s breakout hit “The Substance”, the long-awaited “Deadpool & Wolverine” team-up, and the return of our beloved cinematic GOAT in “Paddington in Peru”. However, it pales in comparison to what we can expect from The Black List’s top scripts of 2024.

After an IP (Intellectual Property) becomes public, horror enthusiasts often turn it into a horror movie, and this has even extended to the life of a former U.S. President, being transformed into a wild slasher film. A notable example is “Camp David” by Megan Amram and Joseph Carnegie, which narrates the tale of a young boy and his siblings who are pursued by a masked serial killer during their vacation at the namesake camp. But there’s more! Another well-known figure is receiving the genre treatment as well, with Aubrey Hepburn’s secret life becoming an espionage thriller in “Little Black Dress” (Alyson Weaver Nicholas). The script reimagines the Breakfast at Tiffany’s star as a CIA operative hunting Nazis. What makes this even more astonishing is that it’s loosely based on a true story, as during WWII, Hepburn worked for the Dutch Resistance as a spy.

It’s not all bonkers genre plots though. This year’s Black List is filled with biopics about famous individuals and companies. Tickle Me Elmo (Aaron Karo) explores how the titular puppet “saved Sesame Street, shocked Wall Street, and tickled the nation.” Meanwhile, Tony (Lou Howe and Todd Bartels) follows a young Anthony Bourdain at his first job washing dishes in Provincetown, and how he rose to the culinary megastar we now know him as. Tony is already in the works at A24. The Holdovers‘ Dominic Sessa is currently in talks to play the titular chef.

The Black List 2024 Includes a Lot of Horror Movies

Despite the shifting tides in western and superhero genres, it seems that horror movies remain everlasting. The year 2024 has been particularly thrilling for horror enthusiasts, with films like “The Substance” reviving Cronenberg-style body-horror with a witty undertone, and the triumphant comeback of Art the Clown in “Terrifier 3“. Moreover, this year’s Black List is brimming with fresh and engaging horror screenplays.

In addition to the earlier discussed slasher film set at Camp David, “How to Save Your Marriage” (Ross Evans) infuses romance into the cult horror genre by telling the story of a couple who attend a seemingly innocent couples retreat, unaware that it’s actually a cover for a dangerous cult. The official summary goes: “A husband and wife join a mysterious retreat with hopes of spicing up their marriage, but soon discover it’s a front for a perilous cult.” On the other hand, “Howl” (Madison Vanderbeg) takes the late-night talk show theme from “Late Night With the Devil” and adds a werewolf twist. Here’s the synopsis: “All chaos ensues when a well-known but troubled actor reveals on live television that he will transform into a werewolf in less than an hour.
