The second installment of “Den of Thieves” featuring Gerard Butler has catapulted his character Nick O’Brien back to number one on the HBO streaming chart. This recent appearance has proven Butler’s initial success with the film in 2018 was no fluke, and the two movies’ joint triumph validates his decision to continue the franchise.
As a fan, I find myself immersed in the gritty world of “Den of Thieves,” where I, as an ex-Marine turned bank robber (portrayed by Pablo Schreiber), am pitted against an unconventional detective, played by Butler. This high-octane cat-and-mouse game is filled with pulse-pounding chases, intense action sequences, and a standout performance from Butler himself. “Den of Thieves” has carved out a niche in the bustling market of action thrillers, and now, in its latest streaming release, it’s reasserted that position. Joining Butler in this heist movie are O’ Shea Jackson, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Evan Jones, Mo McRae, Dawn Olivieri, and Brian Van Holt.
On a production budget of $30 million, Den of Thieves turned out to be a smart investment, earning over $80 million globally – enough to ensure a follow-up movie. However, it didn’t receive glowing reviews from critics, who gave it a 41% rating and noted the familiar action film cliches that seem to resonate with audiences. Now that the movie is back at the top of streaming charts due to renewed interest on Max, it’s clear that both the film and its genre continue to appeal to viewers.
Gerard Butler Made a Successful Action Return in ‘Den of Thieves 2: Pantera’
The sequel to “Den of Thieves 2: Panther” debuted in cinemas on January 10, swiftly dethroning Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” to take the top position on the domestic box office rankings. The film has already recouped its production costs and continues to perform strongly as it enters its second week in theaters. This strong performance has undoubtedly stirred discussions about a third installment, and excitingly for fans, Butler and director Christian Gudegast have been actively working on plans for another movie. In a recent chat with MovieWeb, Gudegast revealed:
From the outset, there was an instant connection between us – a mutual understanding that he embodies the essence of a true man’s man. His imposing stature only added to our bond. Our shared interests in the creative realm seemed to bring us closer, and by the time we collaborated on Den of Thieves, we had a history together. We’d dabbled in a few projects that didn’t make it to the big screen, but some did. Tucker Tooley, our producer, also had a working relationship with him. Our collaboration style meshes incredibly well, and we eagerly anticipate future collaborations.
This is fantastic news for enthusiasts of this series, as well as for Butler, who’s been expanding his repertoire of crowd-pleasing action flicks. His portfolio includes the “Fallen” franchise and “Plane”. With “Den of Thieves” poised to launch another major franchise for him, there’s no better moment than now to catch the original film on Max.
