Gerard Butler’s Plane Is Huge on Netflix, But What’s Happening With That Ship Sequel?

It’s been two years since Gerard Butler and Mike Colter starred together in the 2023 hit action movie “Plane.” We’ve also been waiting almost as long for news about a sequel. The original film told the thrilling story of a commercial pilot and a suspected killer who joined forces to safeguard passengers after their plane crashed amidst a civil war. It was an enjoyable, adrenaline-pumping ride at the cinema, and one of Butler’s finest performances.

Since I’ve grown fond of the Plane, which is a favorite among Netflix subscribers like myself, I find myself pondering about the upcoming sequel that was announced some time back. I can’t help but wonder if and when we might get to see it. Here’s what I’ve managed to gather in my research…

I Forgot All About Plane Until It Randomly Popped Up On Netflix

To clarify, let me tell you that when Plane was released in January 2023, I adored it. In fact, I went to see it during its opening weekend and couldn’t stop talking about Jean-Francois Richet’s action-packed thriller. I had a lot of thoughts about the movie at the time. However, since then, there have been several other Gerard Butler films that have come out, causing me to forget all about Plane until it unexpectedly appeared on Netflix. Similar to Geostorm, which gained popularity years after its release on Netflix, Plane is currently dominating the streaming charts.

Returning to it was an absolute blast. While it doesn’t feature any wild “Big Nick” moments reminiscent of the party scene in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, or Butler firing off guns non-stop, this entertaining throwback action-thriller delivers some intense moments.

Re-visiting it was a blast! Although there aren’t any “Big Nick” scenes like the party sequence from Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, and Butler isn’t blasting guns left and right, this enjoyable throwback action-thriller has its moments where it really kicks things up a notch.

Above all, I’ve found myself intrigued by all the recent chatter about a possible sequel to the original film, which is fittingly titled “Ship“. To help satiate your curiosity, I’d like to share with you an overview of what we know so far about the movie since its announcement over two years ago.

The Plane Sequel, Ship, Was Announced Right After The Original Tore Into Theaters In Early 2023

In February 2023, even as Plane was cruising through its $75 million box office streak, Variety revealed that a film named Ship was under development. The revelation of a sequel just one month after the initial film hit theaters showed bold confidence from producers MadRiver Pictures, Di Bonaventura Pictures, and G-BASE Productions, suggesting they were very hopeful about the potential success of this action movie series.

Moreover, the report indicated a plan to commence shooting the sequel by the year’s end, but unfortunately, this didn’t materialize as filming didn’t begin that year or any subsequent years. I can’t help but ponder what will eventually happen to the sequel that generated so much excitement two years ago.

The Action Thriller Would Focus On Mike Colter’s Character After The Events Of The First Film

One intriguing and unusual characteristic of the upcoming film “Ship” is that its pilot, Brodie Torrance, who once flew for the RAF and now works commercially, will not be the central character in the “Plane” sequel. Contrarily, as highlighted in an article referenced above on Variety, the movie will instead concentrate on Mike Colter’s Louis Gaspare, a former member of the French Foreign Legion who was accused of murder and was being transported to Toronto to stand trial in the original film.

In the wake of the events depicted in the initial film where Gaspare fended off remnant rebels to ensure Torrance and the passengers safely evacuated, followed by his dashing into the jungle with a sack of money and a newfound liberty, the subsequent narrative will delve into the aftermath of Gaspare’s flight. The second installment will reveal that Gaspare, wanted by multiple authorities, has taken refuge as a stowaway on a cargo ship unbeknownst to him, which is secretly used for an expansive human trafficking enterprise. And so, the tale resumes…

It Sounds Like The 2023 Writers And Actors Strikes Put Ship On Hold

The voyage of the ship proceeded smoothly as the plane sequel readied itself to depart from the port, but then an unexpected major hurdle arose in the form of the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which significantly halted Hollywood’s activities for a considerable period. March 2025, two years following the initial announcement, saw Colter revealing to Collider that the strike had caused chaos: the project was affected adversely.

The situation is that an event occurred while the strike was ongoing. They were supposed to continue with it, but then the strike took place. There are several developments happening. Since Gerard Butler and his production company own the rights to it, they hold the key to progressing it further, given my current commitments and I assume he has as well, being busy with filming. However, I’m eager for a sequel, but at the moment, it seems to be in their court. It’s another matter to hope for a resolution.

It’s uncertain if the delay caused by the union strikes is merely postponing further development or completely halting the sequel’s production plans. Here’s hoping it’s the former rather than the latter.

Though Gerard Butler’s Not Supposed To Be Starring, Maybe These Delays Will Open It Up For Brodie Torrance’s Return

Despite my disappointment that the Plane series hasn’t continued for so long, I remain optimistic that these delays will provide an opportunity for Butler to reprise his role in some fashion for Ship. Notably, Butler, who has recently starred in the live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon, is quite busy with projects such as the long-awaited sequel Greenland 2 and the eagerly anticipated third installment of Den of Thieves. Fingers crossed that he’ll find time to revive one of his most memorable characters in recent years.

Surely everyone is excited to witness Brodie Torrance back in action, piloting planes, firing weapons, and dishing out some serious toughness once more!

It’s possible that “Ship” could be added to the 2026 film lineup once all is said and done; I really hope so, since I’d love to see more from this series.
