The initial court case concerning a sexual assault allegation against the renowned French actor, Gerard Depardieu, has commenced in Paris, and he himself is present at the proceedings.
In my gaming world, I’d rephrase it as:
I’ve heard some shocking news about a legendary French actor, known for his iconic roles like Cyrano de Bergerac (1990), Green Card (1990), and The Last Metro (1981). Recently, there have been accusations against him, claiming that he committed assault on the set of the 2021 French feature film, The Green Shutters. This is certainly not the image I had of this esteemed actor in my mind.
Two women from the production team, specifically a set designer and an assistant director, have accused Depardieu of sexual misconduct during the making of Jean Becker’s period drama film. Depardieu has refuted these claims. The movie, adapted from Georges Simenon’s 1950 novel, features Depardieu in the role of a renowned yet oppressive actor struggling with personal and professional deterioration.
On Monday, Depardieu stands trial for the first time on formal charges of sexual assault. For quite some time now, there have been numerous accusations against him regarding inappropriate sexual conduct, all of which he has strenuously refuted.
Initially slated to face charges in court last October, Depardieu’s trial was postponed due to health issues arising from a quadruple coronary bypass surgery and diabetes. A court-assigned medical expert later declared him well enough to attend the proceedings. The judge has set certain rules for his involvement, such as keeping hearings no longer than six hours, providing breaks every three hours, and ensuring easy access to private restrooms and snacks to keep a check on his blood sugar levels.
Beyond this ongoing court case, the 76-year-old actor, Depardieu, is embroiled in another legal dispute. Actress Charlotte Arnould has lodged an official complaint against him, alleging rape that occurred in 2018. This matter has been under investigation by the French judicial system for the past seven years. Additionally, a separate accusation made by French actress Hélène Darras was previously dropped due to the expiration of the statute of limitations. In this case, Depardieu stood accused of assaulting Darras on the set of Fabien Onteniente’s film Disco in 2007.
The French media, previously not very vocal about the accusations, is now extensively broadcasting the trial. On Monday, Libération released a two-page article pondering over the trial’s implications: “Who will stand trial on March 24 and 25… A common man? A representation? Or a figure so revered for so long that it was assumed he transcended the law?” Protesters from feminist groups assembled outside the courthouse, shouting slogans like “We support the victims” and “One assault? We all react!
If convicted, Depardieu faces up to five years in prison and a €75,000 ($81,000) fine.
