Christian Petzold, a renowned filmmaker from Germany, has just been appointed as the fresh president of the Vienna Film Festival (Viennale), with his term starting right away.
The position is assumed by him following a vacancy caused by Eric Pleskow’s death, who served as the head of the Viennale from 1998 up until his passing in 2019.
Christian Petzold has a long-standing relationship with the festival, both as a director and personal friend. Several of his films have had their Austrian debut at the Gartenbaukino during the Viennale. In his role as President of the Viennale, which is an organization, Petzold holds the highest rank within it.
On Friday, Petzold highly commended the Viennale. He mentioned the John Ford Retrospective, the one featuring essayistic film “The Way of the Termites,” and “Los Angeles: A City on Film.” He went on to say that all the wonderful retrospectives make the Viennale exceptional. Moreover, he added that the Viennale is also always a stunning chronicle of a movie year.
He commented on the Viennale: “Maybe it’s the most skillfully curated festival, but I’m not allowed to admit that. It’s rumored that Billy Wilder referred to Barbara Stanwyck as the ‘greatest actress,’ and when he later sent a script to Joan Crawford, it came back unread with a note saying, ‘Send it to the best actress…’. So, I’m extremely pleased to be involved in the Viennale.
Eva Sangiorgi, as the Viennale’s director, emphasized: “The Viennale has had a deep-rooted bond with Christian Petzold and his filmmaking, and on a personal level, I deeply resonate with his cinematic works. It is a significant privilege that he will be assuming the presidency of our festival. Given his consistent and coherent directorial style, I am confident that he will infuse the festival with fresh, invigorating ideas and insights during a period when discussions about cinema and culture are particularly intricate.
On Friday, it was announced that the Viennale has prolonged Sangiorgi’s contract for an additional three years. Since taking on her position in March 2018, she will now oversee the festival’s artistic direction until March 2029.
Sangiorgi expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the show of trust, saying it invigorates the festival with fresh enthusiasm. He emphasized that the Viennale has a strong connection to the city’s social and cultural tapestry, as evidenced by the impressive attendance figures in recent times, even amidst numerous obstacles. Moreover, it is globally recognized for its exceptional film lineup, unwavering commitment, and distinct curatorial vision.

Sangiorgi gratefully acknowledged the confidence bestowed upon him, stating it rekindles vigor in the festival’s organization. He highlighted that the Viennale is deeply interwoven in the social and cultural fabric of the city, as demonstrated by the substantial audience turnout over the past years, despite various hurdles. Furthermore, it is esteemed worldwide for its exceptional film selection, steadfastness, and precise curatorial approach.
She made a promise, saying, “New endeavors will emerge, fitting for the current era – always adhering to the timeless traditions of the Viennale.
