Get Ready for a Mind-Blowing ‘Star Wars: Visions’ Season 3 Reveal!

An exciting new image from Star Wars: Visions Season 3 has debuted online as part of the Annecy Festival, offering a first look at the next volume of the animated anthology series on Disney+. The latest innovative take on the galaxy far, far away promises plenty of color, chaos, and combat as a snapshot (seen below) from an upcoming episode, titled “Black,” teases a “psychedelic” stormtrooper battle that makes it look like the white-clad soldiers have swapped their blasters for paintball guns as the fight scene includes splashes of oranges, yellows, and blues, creating a very vibrant picture of an otherwise seemingly dark event.

The synopsis for the 13-minute episode promises to disrupt the galaxy with “a psychedelic battle between past and present, light and dark, life and death,” which “rages in the tormented psyche of an Imperial soldier near defeat.” The description certainly aligns with the first-look image, but the animation presents the story in a visually striking way, which is perhaps unsurprising when you learn that this chapter hails from the legendary Japanese animator Shinya Ohira. The style of Ohira’s work is often described as both realistic and surreal, with many of his past projects showcasing a blend of the two different art forms.

If you’re wondering where you might have seen his work before, Ohira has been one of Studio Ghibli’s key animators for many years. His collaboration with the Japanese animation studio started in the early ’90s, with his input on Only Yesterday leading to a team-up with Hayao Miyazaki on Porco Rosso. He has since been involved with several important and notable projects, such as Spirited Away, The Wind Rises, and The Boy and the Heron. Most recently, Ohira participated in One Piece‘s Wano arc, bringing another memorable addition to his packed portfolio.

‘Star Wars: Visions’ Presents Stories Through a Unique Lens

Star Wars: Visions serves as a celebration of the long-running sci-fi franchise, presenting new stories through the lens of some of the world’s best animators. The shorts in Volume 1 and Volume 2 offered unique perspectives on the mythos of Star Wars, bringing Samurai-esque duels, an electric rock opera, and much more to the screen. The series has been met with critical acclaim and currently stands at a hugely impressive 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. MovieWeb’s own Stephen Rosenberg heaped praise on Season 2, commending the “global representation within its animation, phenomenal regionally curated music, and deeper, more emotional, and more personal characters and stories.”

The first volume of Star Wars: Visions was released on Sept. 22, 2021, while the second volume joined the Disney+ streaming library on May 4, 2023. The upcoming third installment of the animated anthology show is set to debut sometime in 2025, with nine more short films from various studios, including David Production, Kamikaze Douga + ANIMA, Kinema Citrus Co., Polygon Pictures, Production I.G, Project Studio Q, TRIGGER, and WIT Studio. An exact release date for Season 3 has not yet been confirmed, but with the Annecy Festival at the beginning of June, an announcement shouldn’t be too far behind. Watch this space.
