Video games with cinematic qualities often captivate their players, making it no wonder that they are popular choices for movie and TV adaptations. For instance, PlayStation has already produced some outstanding series and films based on games like “The Last of Us” and “Uncharted”, and there’s more to come in the near future.

As a devoted fan, I’d like to share with you the list of upcoming movies and TV shows, which are officially confirmed and not just rumors, that are based on popular PlayStation games, set to be released over the coming years.

10
‘God of War’

The God of War series comprises nine games, blending Greek and Norse mythology. Throughout these games, the Spartan warrior Kratos is portrayed as he ascends to the position of God of War and engages in combat with various deities. The upcoming TV series intends to adapt the latter part of the games (with some fans hoping for the Greek era to be incorporated too). Despite the anticipated thrilling TV experience, many fans yearn for a film instead.

Faces a Lot of Issues

Strong fan views are merely the beginning of the challenges faced by God of War. The series, first announced in 2022, experienced a significant setback when its producers departed, effectively requiring a fresh start. However, showrunner Ronald D. Moore has stepped in, and his experience with fantasy shows might help breathe life into the God of War universe.

9
‘Ghost of Tsushima’

2021 saw the announcement of a movie adaptation for the game “Ghost of Tsushima,” with Chad Stahelski, renowned for his work on “John Wick,” stepping up as director. Stahelski has shared intriguing concepts for the film, including filming it entirely in Japanese and presenting it in black and white. His enthusiasm is palpable, and fingers crossed, this passion will contribute to its success.

Still in the Works

Previously, the director expressed his intent to carefully craft the movie, ensuring its perfection. As we stand in 2023, the project is still underway, with the recent announcement that a script has been penned, providing an accurate portrayal. What’s more exciting for enthusiasts of the game is that it’s not the sole Ghost of Tsushima project in progress.

8
‘Ghost of Tsushima: Legends’

In development for PlayStation is exclusively the anime titled “Ghost of Tsushima: Legends,” set to launch in 2027. This game features a cooperative multiplayer structure that lets players engage online or with friends, assuming roles as Samurai, Ronin, Assassins, and Hunters. These characters team up to combat the malevolent Oni and crush the Mongol Empire.

An Exciting Adaptation

Transforming “Ghost of Tsushima: Legends” into an anime would be a brilliant move, given its existing elements of Japanese artistry and folklore. A skilled and committed team is already in place to ensure the anime realizes its fullest potential.

7
‘Days Gone’

Days Gone is a zombie-themed open-world game where you play as Deacon St. John, who embarks on a journey to locate and rescue his wife Sarah. Despite plans for a sequel, it was eventually scrapped, possibly because of the game’s mixed reception. Yet, fans remain fond of Days Gone, and their enduring affection has rekindled discussions about turning it into a movie.

Shambling On

In 2022, it was announced that a film based on the video game “Days Gone” is in development, with Sam Heughan taking on the role of Deacon. However, there hasn’t been much new information shared since then. Let’s cross our fingers that the upcoming remastered version of the game will reignite enthusiasm and possibly lead to more updates.

6
‘Gravity Rush’

The game titled Gravity Rush revolves around Kat, a character suffering from amnesia who possesses the unique ability to manipulate gravity as a Shifter. Awakening in a floating city under attack by mysterious creatures known as Nevi, she is eventually drafted to aid in their eradication and the defense of the city. Simultaneously, she embarks on a mission to recover her lost memories.

Strange Choices

Gravity Rush, which debuted in 2012, was an immense success, but its potential adaptation has left some dedicated fans perplexed. For instance, there are concerns about how a live-action portrayal might translate. Many also feel that shifting the narrative to a more contemporary setting seems at odds with the original’s essence.

5
‘Helldivers’

This year in January, it was announced that a live-action movie adaptation of the game Helldivers is underway, with the film set to be based on its sequel, Helldivers 2. The SciFi shooter game is set in the future and revolves around a colony aiming to impose democracy across other planets. When you’re drafted into the Helldivers, it’s your duty to engage in the Galactic War against Automatons, aliens, and various other adversaries.

Plenty to Dive Into

The runaway hit game from Playstation, Helldivers 2, had a cinematic adaptation seemingly destined, with widespread anticipation. With the recent announcement, details are scant, but the game developers already have innovative concepts brewing to make this film distinctive.

4
‘Horizon Zero Dawn’

In the role-playing game titled “Horizon Zero Dawn,” we follow a youthful hunter named Aloy. Born outside her tribe, she now possesses a device called Focus – an advanced technology that heightens her senses. As Aloy navigates a post-apocalyptic world teeming with bizarre mechanical creatures resembling animals, she embarks on a journey to uncover her origins while exploring the mysteries of her past.

From Small Screen to Big Screen

Back in January, news broke out that the game “Horizon Zero Dawn” would be adapted into a live-action film. Earlier, there were plans for a Netflix series, but it got scrapped. However, fans are optimistic that transitioning to a movie format was indeed the best decision made.

3
‘Resident Evil’ Reboot

The Resident Evil game series revolves around undead creatures birthed by clandestine research conducted by the Umbrella Corporation. In the initial installment, players delved into Raccoon City, combating these beasts as they switched between characters like Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield. Subsequent games unveiled fresh environments for exploration and adversaries to conquer, all while attempting to curb and halt the spread of the T-virus.

The Latest in a Series of Adaptations

Many different versions of Resident Evil have been produced so far, and not long ago, Zach Cregger from Barbarian became the director for a reboot. While some are eager to see what he’ll contribute to the series, others express reservations about his decision to stick closely to the early games, since Welcome to Raccoon City did an excellent job of adapting them.

2
‘Uncharted’ Sequel

The game titled “Uncharted” narrates the story of treasure hunter Nathan Drake who embarks on a thrilling odyssey across legendary cities like El Dorado and Shambhala in search of hidden riches. In the film adaptation, Tom Holland portrays Drake’s character. Although the movie received mixed feedback from fans, the upcoming sequel offers an opportunity to regain their favor.

Uncharted Territories

Little information is available about the impending “Uncharted” sequel, as it has encountered numerous setbacks because of Tom Holland’s packed movie calendar. Yet, there’s optimism that the next installment could outperform the initial film, given the resurgence in interest for these movies due to streaming platforms and the opportunity to correct any flaws from the original.

1
‘Until Dawn’

Until Dawn, which debuted in 2015, gained massive popularity due to its intricate butterfly effect gameplay, inventive use of tropes, and unforgettable characters. This horror game placed players in charge of multiple characters as they made their way back to Blackwood Mountain following a mishap with a prank. The fate of each character hinged on the player’s decisions: some would live through the night while others met grisly, distinctive ends. As the player navigated the mystery surrounding the Mountain and gathered clues, they sought to unravel its secrets.

Changing the Format

Set for release in April of this year, the upcoming “Until Dawn” film appears to deviate from its video game origins. The creators opted to introduce fresh characters and incorporate a time loop mechanism, allowing these characters to perish and resurrect. Although some enthusiasts anticipated a precise portrayal, the game itself provided a cinematic experience. Consequently, their decision to venture into uncharted territory seems justified, and hopefully, it signifies the beginning of an engaging new cinematic journey for both gamers and moviegoers.
