The release of Ghost of Tsushima in 2020 took open-world games to a whole new level.
One significant feature it introduced was the Guiding Wind, allowing players to explore the island by following wind patterns rather than relying on markers or excessive HUD elements. This navigation method was seamless, immersive, and surprisingly evocative, mirroring the protagonist’s bond with his father within the game’s narrative.
On October 2, 2025, the Ghost of Yōtei reintroduces the Guiding Wind mechanic. In their latest trailer, Sucker Punch showed Atsu walking beneath a ginkgo tree while wind swirled around her, hinting at the return of this feature in the game. Many fans believe that this confirms the continuation of Tsushima’s spirit in the sequel, although not everyone agrees with that interpretation.
Restoring the Guiding Wind has ignited quite a discussion. After all, given its previous popularity, it seems logical to re-implement it. The reason being, the system was highly acclaimed for fostering a more authentic exploration journey and keeping players engaged without resorting to typical compass symbols or blinking signals.
Applying the same concept used in Tsushima could significantly enhance Yōtei’s atmosphere, particularly with its revamped environment covered in snowy Hokkaido wilderness. With a larger play area and innovative features such as the ability to wield two katanas and ōdachis, Yōtei is well-equipped for an engaging, immersive gameplay experience.
On the other hand, some argue that Yōtei might not be the ideal location for the Guiding Wind. In Tsushima, the wind symbolized Jin Sakai’s father, serving as a poignant reminder of loss since his guardian had mentioned that his father would always be like the wind guiding him from behind.
If the storyline base isn’t established, some critics argue the mechanic might appear shallow or disjointed. Some fans were anticipating an entirely novel navigation system in Yōtei, considering the hint shown in the teaser featuring Atsu with a wolf, which many suspected could be connected to the game’s guidance for players.

Even though they’ve introduced a new character, setting, and more assertive gameplay – Atsu appears less tied to honor compared to Jin – it’s evident that the developers aimed to preserve the elements that made the initial formula so powerful.
Players have the flexibility to summon winds whenever they desire, ensuring they maintain control and direction without overwhelming the screen with numerous alerts. However, it remains uncertain if this feature will resonate as deeply as its predecessor. The Ghost of Yōtei preserves effective elements while allowing the game world to progress, unlike some sequels that forsake their unique identity in pursuit of novelty.
Players of PlayStation 5 will receive the game in October, with pre-ordering available from May 2. The choice lies between Standard, Digital Deluxe, or Collector’s Edition versions. Once within Atsu’s realm, players will follow the wind’s guidance.
