As a longtime Ghostbuster fan, I must say that the news about the upcoming animated series has me absolutely ectoplasmically excited! Having grown up with the original series and later embracing the 2016 film, I can’t help but feel like this new venture is the ultimate crossing of proton streams.

Over the last few years, the Ghostbusters franchise has experienced a significant comeback, with two thrilling movies set to release in 2021’s “Afterlife” and 2024’s “Frozen Empire.” It appears this momentum won’t be waning any time soon. One factor contributing to this continued success is the upcoming Ghostbusters animated series, aiming to make its mark among Netflix’s top shows as quickly as possible.

In the span of several decades since The Real Ghostbusters graced our Saturday mornings with their presence, we’ll soon find ourselves revisiting an animated New York City. Once more, we’ll join our fearless ghost-hunting team as they battle ghosts, supernatural forces, and otherworldly beings, recapturing the excitement of 1984!

If you haven’t heard yet, here’s a rundown of what we currently know about the highly anticipated Netflix series coming up.

Despite our eagerness, there hasn’t been a confirmed premiere date for the upcoming animated “Ghostbusters” series on Netflix as of now. Keep an eye out in the coming weeks and months for any updates about its release, so you won’t miss the chance to join the Ghostbusters on their ghost-chasing adventures in 2024.

The Ghostbusters Animated Series Cast

Information about the cast for the upcoming Ghostbusters animated series is currently under wraps, as Netflix has not disclosed any details regarding the characters set to appear on the show. However, it’s possible that they might invite the surviving members of the original Ghostbusters cast to voice their respective characters, given that Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson all played significant roles in the more recent movies.

The show might consider adopting a strategy similar to that used by shows such as “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous” and “Fast & Furious Spy Racers”, which often focus on new characters instead of continuing from where famous figures like Dr. Alan Grant or Dominic Toretto left off.

What Is The Ghostbusters Animated Series About?

Is the Ghostbusters animated series going to be set after the conclusion of Frozen Empire, or before the movies, or will it feature an entirely new story within the Ghostbusters universe? At this moment, it remains uncertain as no details about the plot have been disclosed.

As a gaming enthusiast eagerly awaiting updates on our favorite 3D-animated series, I can’t help but share exciting whispers from the grapevine. According to Variety’s recent report in August 2024, it seems the upcoming project might draw inspiration from the latest Ghostbusters films in terms of tone. This intriguing tidbit, yet to be officially confirmed by Netflix, hints at a potential return for Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) and Trevor Spengler (Finn Wolfhard). If this proves true, we could be in for a storyline that either expands the Ghostbusters’ universe or strips it back to its roots. Fingers crossed!

Given that Wolfhard is collaborating with Netflix on the forthcoming Stranger Things Season 5, it’s likely that we might see both him and his character in some capacity during the new season.

Elliott Kalan Will Be The Writer And Executive Producer Of The Ghostbusters Animated Series

According to an article in Variety about the upcoming Ghostbusters animated series, it was additionally disclosed that Elliott Kalan will be penning the show and serving as one of its executive producers. Known for his four Primetime Emmy Awards won during his tenure as head writer for The Daily Show, Kalan has also worked on Netflix’s revival of Mystery Science Theater 3000, so this collaboration with the streaming platform is not surprising.

In the upcoming animated version of “Ghostbusters,” Kalan won’t be working solo. Directors Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, known for their work on “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and “Frozen Empire,” will also serve as executive producers through their production company Ghost Corps, Inc. The roles of directors for the series are yet to be announced, so we’ll just have to stay tuned for further updates.

Gil Kenan And Jason Reitman Have Been Working On The Ghostbusters Animated Series Since 2022

Despite appearing as though the animated series is only recently gaining momentum, it has, in fact, been under development for several years. Gil Kenan and Jason Reitman have both played significant roles throughout this period. In June 2022, shortly after the revival of the franchise with Afterlife, Netflix revealed that a series was in production at their streaming service without disclosing many details initially.

For about two years, it appeared as though things had become quiet, but this was expected given the team’s focus on the project titled “Frozen Empire“. However, this silence was broken in March 2024 when Kenan discussed his most recent directorial work during an interview on A Trip to the Movies. When asked for an update, he shared the following:

I’m absolutely thrilled! I’ve just finished watching an entire show presentation filled with art, which included the sets and environments. For the first time, I caught a sneak peek of the supernatural characters brought to life by our incredibly talented creative team. In other words, the project is progressing swiftly and is currently in its ‘full development’ phase. Scripts are being penned, artwork is being created, and it’s an exhilarating time to be part of the Ghostbusters crew!

In March 2024, those comments were made. By now, given that they’ve completed work on the ‘Frozen Empire’, Kenan, Reitman, and Elliott Kalan might have progressed significantly further in their work.

The Netflix Show Will Be The Third Ghostbusters Animated Series

As a devoted fan, I’m excitedly looking forward to the day when this amazing animated series finally hits our screens – marking its place as the third installment within the beloved franchise.

Back in 1986, my gaming world was transformed by “The Real Ghostbusters” – an animated show that’s hard to beat even today. It aired on ABC and syndication from ’86 until ’91, keeping us entertained for years. The characters were based on the movie crew, but with unique voices provided by different actors. This series was a blockbuster, sparking a wave of merchandise, including a popular glow-in-the-dark pillowcase. Some of us might still be holding onto that relic from our past!

About a decade and a bit afterwards, Extreme Ghostbusters first aired in syndication. However, unlike its original run which continued for seven seasons, this sequel ended prematurely after just one.

More recently, there was an attempt to transform the franchise into an animated television series, however, no updates about this project have been announced for years now. Back in 2016, it was reported that Sony Pictures Animation was developing a show called Ghostbusters: Ecto Force, which would introduce a team of future-oriented ghostbusters traveling around the world in the coming years. According to IndieWire, this series was slated for release in early 2018, but it ultimately didn’t come to fruition.

In the upcoming months, there will likely be additional updates on the new Ghostbusters animated show. For those who are eager, the movie “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is available for viewing immediately with a Netflix membership.
