I, Giancarlo Esposito, have been keeping busy lately with my successful run on AMC’s “Parish” and completed roles in “Captain America: Brave New World” and the Russo Brothers’ “The Electric State.” With over a half dozen projects currently in progress, you might think I wouldn’t look back. But there’s one role that continues to call my name: Gus Fring from “Breaking Bad.” In an exclusive interview with Discussing Film, I shared updates on my recent work and expressed my desire to revisit this iconic character once more.
Although “Parish” didn’t achieve the same level of success as “Breaking Bad” or “Better Call Saul” for AMC, Esposito’s portrayal of a man drawn back into criminal activities following a personal loss has garnered positive feedback. The decision on a second season remains uncertain, but Esposito is moving forward with other projects, such as an upcoming guest role on Peacock’s popular show “Poker Face” featuring Natasha Lyonne. Nevertheless, he expressed eagerness to collaborate once more if AMC and “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan requested his involvement in a potential “Gus Fring” series.

As a longtime fan of “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” I strongly believe that Gus Fring deserves more recognition through a prequel series. According to Esposito, he and Gould have talked about the potential for a Gus Fring prequel series. However, he didn’t provide any details on the status of these discussions. With the depth that “Better Call Saul” brought to the character, it’s clear that there is an abundance of untold stories about Gus Fring, making a captivating series a strong possibility.
“I think we all want to know more about his complicated nature and how he came to be,” he said.
Will Breaking Bad Get Another Prequel or Sequel?
Fans of “Breaking Bad” have expressed their desire for more stories featuring the show’s beloved characters. Some were skeptical about a potential spin-off centered around Bob Odenkirk’s Saul Goodman, but many now regard “Better Call Saul” as a worthy successor, if not even surpassing its predecessor’s acclaim. The creative minds behind the series are currently hesitant to revisit the “Breaking Bad” universe, with Gilligan stating in an interview with Variety in October 2023 that he’d prefer to keep it untouched for now. However, if his current projects don’t succeed, he might reconsider.
Based on my own experiences and perspective, I can relate to the frustration of putting time and effort into a project that isn’t resonating with audiences. If the next few shows fail miserably and the demand is for something else, such as “Breaking Bad,” it may be necessary to reevaluate our direction. However, it’s important to remember that every setback is an opportunity to learn and grow. I personally believe in the value of perseverance and not giving up too easily. But at this moment, I feel drawn to move on from this project and explore new possibilities.
Following the conclusion of “Breaking Bad” in 2013, Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould went on to create and produce six seasons of “Better Call Saul,” airing from 2015 to 2022. In 2019, Gilligan helmed the direction of “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie,” featuring Aaron Paul’s return to wrap up Jesse Pinkman’s storyline. Currently, it seems that may be all the content from the “Breaking Bad” universe we will receive, unless Bob Odenkirk (Saul Goodman) can persuade Gilligan otherwise.
