As a gamer who grew up binge-watching Gilmore Girls, I can confidently say that the show was more than just a love triangle; it was a coming-of-age journey for Rory and her relationships with Dean, Jess, and Logan. While I understand why many fans are Team Jess or Team Dean, my heart has always belonged to Logan – the suave, charismatic, old-movie star-esque young man played by Matt Czuchry.
In “Gilmore Girls,” the love triangle was never the main focus; instead, it showcased the growth of Rory Gilmore as she allowed certain young men into her life and heart. Fans often debate their preferred boyfriend for Rory, but I’ve been online long enough to know that Team Jess is popular with a sprinkle of Team Dean. However, I’ve always leaned towards Team Logan, so hearing Kelly Bishop’s choice for the best boyfriend of Rory made me cheer!
Kelly Bishop, who played Emily Gilmore, grandma to Rory and mom to Lorelei in the popular drama series, took on that role again when A Year In The Life became available on Netflix. More recently, she attended a Gallery Books event where an interviewer questioned her about each of Rory’s love interests. Check out the entertaining TikTok clip below for details!

When questioned about her preference among Rory’s boyfriends, Ms. Bishop openly confessed that she’s always sided with “Logan,” a character portrayed later by Matt Czuchry, who is known for his roles in shows like The Good Wife and The Resident. However, it’s important to note that she did appreciate the other two significant figures in Rory’s life, played by Jared Padalecki and Milo Ventimiglia.
I have to admit I’m Team Logan. Although I really love the other two. There’s something about Logan–something about his acting that I particularly liked in working with him. He had a very manly quality about him. The other two were boys – great boys. But Logan was like an old movie star. Like a man.
Rory didn’t end up with a forgettable love interest, at least when it comes to the actors chosen for the show. For instance, Milo Ventimiglia, who played Rory’s boyfriend on Gilmore Girls, has had a consistent career in network TV since then, including his role in This is Us and The Company You Keep. Similarly, Jared Padalecki, who also starred as one of Rory’s loves, transitioned from Gilmore Girls to Supernatural and Walker. Lastly, Czuchry, another love interest, has maintained relevance with roles on network TV since Gilmore Girls aired, and even reprised his role in the revival, A Year in the Life. All three actors have expressed interest in returning for more Gilmore Girls in the future.
Throughout the span of the series “Gilmore Girls“, character Logan has often been criticized by many fans. In reality, actor Matt Czuchry would occasionally encounter unprovoked insults from fans in public. He is the wealthy boyfriend of Rory, unlike the other two suitors, and at the beginning of their relationship, some felt he wasn’t the best partner. Fans often describe him as “rude” and “elitist.”
But I’ve defended Logan, and I’ll do it again here. Logan isn’t burdened by personal problems. Jess acts out because he’s going through stuff and Alexis Bledel once even called him “a shock to her system.” Meanwhile, once Logan chooses to devote himself to Rory, he’s a good boyfriend and he put his focus on their relationship, particularly during the early run of the series. One other thing I like is he also gives Rory no-nonsense advice.
When queried about whether Logan was a “bad boyfriend” years ago, Matt Czuchry tactfully responded by acknowledging that Logan wasn’t flawless, yet also pointed out that Rory’s other boyfriends, Jess and Dean, each had their own strengths and weaknesses. Jess often fell short as a partner for Rory and could be downright poor at times. Dean, who was married later in the series, appeared to behave quite poorly. Despite many people not particularly liking Logan as an individual, I still believe he was Rory’s best boyfriend objectively speaking.
Kelly Bishop’s response appeared to focus more on her professional relationship with Matt Czuchry and the character he portrayed, rather than evaluating whether Logan was a good boyfriend. However, it certainly adds warmth to know that a original cast member of “Gilmore Girls” supports me, especially considering my friends have often criticized me for not being a fan of Jess throughout the years.
