With the surge of interest in turn-based games following Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s release, we believe fans might want to reconsider Marvel’s Midnight Suns. Although the card system may appear complex initially, the gameplay and story are quite endearing once you dive in.
One reason that Midnight Suns is instantly captivating is its unique blend of characters. While you’ll find familiar faces like Iron Man, Captain Marvel, and Doctor Strange, the game also features unexpected heroes from the comics, such as Nico Minoru from The Runaways, Robbie Reyes’ Ghost Rider, and the fan-favorite Magik. These unanticipated characters add a fresh twist to the mix.
The addition of these characters offers players the chance to delve deep into their lives, much like in a Persona game. You can discuss Magik’s history with her, ask Blade about the origin of his name, and even catch a glimpse of Wolverine in swimwear. Regrettably, you cannot socialize with Wolverine, but discovering more about these iconic comic book figures was an enjoyable surprise.
In essence, Marvel’s Midnight Suns truly excels in its gameplay mechanics. Contrary to initial apprehensions due to its card-based system, it turns out to be quite accessible. The cards symbolize the actions your characters are capable of performing, and there’s a gauge indicating how many remaining actions you have. You can rearrange the cards in hopes of drawing better ones with specific abilities. Furthermore, certain aspects of the game environment can be utilized without incurring action point penalties, allowing Spider-Man, for instance, to hurl rocks at his adversaries without wasting any points.
It’s quite enjoyable when you push enemies into each other during battles, as it simplifies the fight. Hitting multiple opponents with a single action brings an unmatched sense of accomplishment. Fingers crossed that Star Wars: Zero Company retains some of these elements, despite the fact that both games are developed by different studios.

Following every skirmish, players have an opportunity to unwind within a mystical manor where they can socialize with various Marvel characters. Here, players can forge connections with these heroes and discover side missions to engage in, which can prove quite entertaining. Additionally, some of these missions delve into the backstory of your character, The Hunter. While these aspects are intriguing, they don’t quite surpass the most engaging part of this game.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns truly deserved another opportunity, and it’s unfortunate that it never truly got one initially. A Switch adaptation was planned, but unfortunately, that plan was scrapped, possibly due to the game’s visual requirements. It’s regrettable this happened because the Nintendo Switch is home to many Fire Emblem enthusiasts, which could have boosted the game’s popularity there.
Hopefully, Midnight Suns gets a Switch 2 port and that sells like pancakes.
