Gladiator 2 Star Shares How the Water Fight Was Really Done

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for historical epics and a soft spot for well-crafted character arcs, I must say that Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II has truly left an indelible mark on me. Fred Hechinger, who charmed us as Quinn Mossbacher in The White Lotus, takes a dramatic turn here, embodying the malevolent Emperor Caracalla with a chilling precision.

Fred Hechinger portrayed the delightfully endearing character Quinn Mossbacher in the initial season of “The White Lotus,” who seems to be the only non-awkward personality. His character development is captivating and optimistic. In contrast, he embarks on a completely different trajectory in Ridley Scott’s upcoming film titled “Gladiator II,” where he assumes the role of Emperor Caracalla, the brother of Joseph Quinn’s Emperor Greta. Together, they portray formidable antagonists that are bound to leave an indelible impression. What might truly stand out from the movie, however, is the massive set piece flooding the Colosseum to orchestrate an awe-inspiring water battle. In a recent conversation with MovieWeb, Hechinger revealed some fascinating details about this scene, as it was inspired by a truly wild historical event.

Back in ancient Roman times, I find myself fascinated by the spectacle of their water fights! This wasn’t just any ordinary entertainment; it was history coming to life. They would fill the grand Colosseum with water and stage these intense combat scenes right there. It was a unique form of theater, a precursor to modern sports entertainment like WWE, but for their era.

In addition to his role in this year’s captivating film “Thelma,” the actor shared insights into the making of the action-packed water fight scene, which was intricately designed on a grand set. Hechinger points out that it showcases Ridley Scott’s detailed approach to filmmaking once more.

Ridley excels at working swiftly, a skill that’s well-known. He often has an impressive number of cameras on set, ranging from eight to twelve. This allows him to capture the grand Colosseum fights almost entirely around, creating a feeling similar to live sports documentaries. As a result, when everything is perfectly timed and executed, multiple angles are captured, enabling quick editing and viewing from various perspectives.

The Emperors of Gladiator II Formed a Vaudeville Double Act

Hechinger found the making of Gladiator II a distinctive experience not only due to flooding the Colosseum, but also because of his unique method of portraying his character. This approach saw him developing a rare camaraderie with Joseph Quinn, who played his on-screen Emperor brother. He described working with Quinn as akin to creating a double act, an unusual collaboration that was both enjoyable and rewarding. The bond formed extended beyond friendship, resembling that of siblings, allowing them to infuse this relationship dynamic into the film. The process felt like two old vaudeville performers coordinating their routine, making it a delightful experience for Hechinger.

Hechinger elaborated about the fraternal Emperors:

“I always thought of it in the sense that Joe and I are both highly codependent and incredibly competitive, and there’s that constant push-and-pull between those things. We kind of lived for each other, but we also lived to destroy one another. It’s that love and hate, and back and forth and back and forth. So building it with him was really enjoyable in that way […] But at the same time, there was always this secret side bubbling underneath for both of us, and we kind of lived for it.”

Apart from other aspects that made Hechinger stand out, collaborating with the exceptional Denzel Washington was truly extraordinary. As anyone who appreciates cinema can attest, Denzel is one of the greatest talents to grace the silver screen. Interacting with him daily was an unforgettable delight that felt spontaneous and captivating. I cherish our creative exchanges, experiences I will always hold dear. Catch their collaboration in action when Gladiator II premieres on November 22 from Paramount Pictures.
