Glenn Close's New Horror Movie The Deliverance Tops Netflix Charts

As a seasoned moviegoer who’s seen my fair share of horror films, I must say that The Deliverance has left quite an impression on me. Having grown up in a diverse community myself, I could resonate with Glenn Close’s portrayal of Alberta Jackson, a character that seemed as alien to her as the Ammons haunting was to us all.

Instead of “The Union” with Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry, the number one movie on Netflix now is “The Deliverance,” starring Glenn Close in an unexpected role. This movie debuted on August 30th and has since taken over the top spot from “The Union,” which had held the position for two weeks. Directed by Lee Daniels, “The Deliverance” also features Andra Day, Mo’Nique, Caleb McLaughlin, and Demi Singleton. The horror film was a hot topic on social media this past weekend, and with good reason.

Drawing inspiration from the chilling Ammons haunting incident that unfolded in Gary, Indiana back in 2011, The Deliverance narrates the harrowing tale of a Black family’s relentless fight against demonic possession. The mother in this story is pushed to extreme limits as she tirelessly strives to rescue her children from this supernatural torment. Notably, the Ammons case has previously garnered attention, with renowned paranormal investigator Zac Bagans, famously known for his work on Ghost Adventures, unveiling the documentary titled Demon House in 2018. This followed his acquisition of the Ammons residence in 2014 for $35,000, a move aimed at shedding light on the enigmatic supernatural occurrences that had long puzzled many.

In The Deliverance, what stands out, beyond its depiction of a family under demonic siege, is the outstanding acting of Academy Award-winner Glenn Close. She masterfully portrays Alberta Jackson, a strong-willed matriarch grappling with her own cancer battle. Interestingly, this role was far from familiar territory for Close, as she hails from a white community and had limited understanding of how to embody Alberta. It wasn’t until she conversed with the director, Daniels, that she found the guidance needed to convincingly play the character.

With a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 31% suggesting mixed reactions, it’s evident that not all critics are enthused about The Deliverance. Interestingly, this is Daniels’ second foray into the horror genre, having served as executive producer on The Reading back in 2023. However, despite the divided opinions of critics, viewers on social media are seemingly enjoying the horror release and praising Close’s performance.

User @kodakk6000 expressed that the horror film “The Deliverance” was unexpectedly excellent, finding Glenn Close’s portrayal of a tough-as-nails grandma particularly captivating and impressive.

“@SHALOMEIBBOTSON agreed wholeheartedly, stating that although the film ‘Deliverance’ itself was only a 4 out of 10, Glenn Close’s acting performance earned an impressive 12 out of 10 from him. Ever since the 80s, he’s been a fan of her talent and will watch any project she’s involved in.”

In the film “The Exorcist,” there’s a specific line delivered by Linda Blair (Close) that sparked conversation among viewers, even prompting a reaction from Daniels. As the exorcism unfolds on young Nathaniel (Nate), the demon assumes the repulsive form of Linda Blair and declares… We encourage you to watch the scene yourself for the full experience.

This year, horror films like “Longlegs”, “In a Violent Nature”, and “Late Night with the Devil” have been particularly noteworthy. If you want to miss out on something great, I wouldn’t recommend overlooking “The Deliverance”. At first glance, it may appear to be just another possession film, but Daniels’ movie delves much deeper, exploring themes of addiction, isolation, and faith in a way that sets it apart from the crowd of recent exorcism films.
