Friday saw social media platforms buzzing following the release of private videos featuring journalist Glenn Greenwald, which appeared online without his approval. In a statement issued on X, Greenwald acknowledged the authenticity of the videos, stating they were disclosed “without my knowledge or consent.” He further explained that the leak seemed to serve a maliciously political purpose.
58-year-old Greenwald was formerly a lawyer specializing in lawsuits, but he shifted his career to online journalism after the 2001 World Trade Center attacks, where he blogged about national security matters. He gained worldwide recognition in 2013 due to a series of articles published in The Guardian, which were based on information from Edward Snowden, a former National Security Agency intelligence contractor and whistleblower who disclosed classified documents revealing global surveillance programs.
Greenwald was a member of the team that won the Pulitzer Prize in 2014 for their coverage. Alongside investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill and documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras (known for breaking the Snowden story), he established The Intercept in 2014. However, he resigned from it in 2020 due to what he perceived as efforts to suppress his criticisms of then-Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. Now, he shares his work on Substack, where he has approximately 324,000 subscribers.
There’s been a lot of attention on Greenwald ever since he became well-known worldwide. In 2014, Laura Poitras made a documentary about the Snowden case titled Citizenfour, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The following year, Snowden was released, where Zachary Quinto portrayed Greenwald. Greenwald’s book from 2014, No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State, was optioned by Sony Pictures that same year, but no movie based on it has been produced yet.
In 2023, Greenwald’s spouse, David Miranda, passed away at the age of 37 due to complications arising from a gastrointestinal infection. The pair had adopted two boys, who were siblings originating from Maceió, Brazil, in the year 2018.
Regarding the leak, Greenwald stated on X, “Concerning the videos’ content: I hold no shame or remorse over them. These videos show consenting adults involved in private, intimate moments. There is nothing harmful to anyone in these videos as all actions depicted are consensual.
Clearly, it’s distressing when personal actions are exposed without consent, as privacy is crucial for such behaviors – but the issue at hand appears to be the unlawful and malicious dissemination of these videos with the intent to smear perceived adversaries in politics and push a political cause,” he pointed out.
