As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation when it comes to the potential return of Kratos and Atreus in the God of War series. Having grown up with the original God of War games, I was captivated by the epic Norse saga that unfolded across generations.
It seems as though the prolonged chill of Fimbulwinter has halted Sony’s iconic God of War series, but it might be time to revive Kratos and Atreus for another appearance on our screens. This revival isn’t just about warming up these characters for a distant journey in a fresh mythology, enthusiastic spectators suspect that multiple games could be in the pipeline.
Since 2005, Santa Monica Studio has primarily focused on the development of the God of War series, with the exception of Kinetica in 2001. The latest installment, God of War Ragnarok in 2022, was a huge success. However, Valhalla’s DLC appeared to wrap up the story last year. Yet, did anyone truly believe that the Ghost of Sparta had met his end?
God of War fans hopeful for multiple games
According to Tech4Gamers’ report, Santa Monica Studio has several job openings available at present. Given that God of War (2018) Game Director Cory Barlog is developing a new intellectual property, it’s not surprising that there are vacancies. However, this situation adds fuel to the speculation that Kratos and Atreus might return earlier than anticipated.
The studio is seeking a seasoned Combat Designer at a senior level, who can fluently converse and delve deeply into the subject of hero combat systems, mechanics, and adversaries within one or several third-person melee action RPG games. This hints that there might be multiple projects underway in their pipeline.
It seems quite plausible that this could be a project related to Kratos, given the mention of both the 2018 reboot and Ragnarok. This assumption is strengthened by the OP’s observation: “The statement directly below the preferred experience suggests familiarity with the last two God of War games, which makes me think that the studio might be developing two new entries in the God of War series.”
Others concurred that this could mark the beginning of a significantly larger God of War universe. One enthusiast even expressed, “I’ve been yearning for an Atreus spin-off since playing Ragnarok. This is fantastic news!” However, one cautious player expressed apprehension, stating, “The last game was magnificent, but I hope Santa Monica Studios doesn’t succumb to the temptation of producing these new games solely as cash grabs.”
Clearly, this is more of a hopeful speculation at the moment, as there’s no official word about the franchise’s future. However, Ragnarok did subtly hint at a transition to a different mythology. Moreover, keen-eyed gamers have noticed possible allusions to the Egyptian and Japanese pantheons within the game.
It’s clear that we won’t see another Norse mythology game from Barlog due to extended development times between releases, which would have required around 15 years to complete a trilogy. Previously, we proposed Chinese mythology, but for the moment, the battle-weary Kratos is taking some time off.
