Golden Globes: Demi Moore Flick ‘The Substance’ Enters As Musical/Comedy (Exclusive)

As a long-time fan who has witnessed the evolution of Hollywood from the golden age to the streaming era, I must say that Coralie Fargeat’s film, “The Substance,” has left me utterly spellbound. The casting of Demi Moore as the aging Hollywood star is nothing short of brilliant, and I can’t wait to see her take the stage at the Golden Globes!

In a surprising move, the film titled “The Substance” directed by Coralie Fargeat, which features an outstanding performance by Demi Moore as an aging Hollywood star, has been proposed for Golden Globes nomination in the musical/comedy category instead of drama, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

With the Globes’ November 4th submission deadline fast approaching, the classification of the MUBI release remained uncertain among the front-runners due to discussions both within the film’s team and Spike Lee himself regarding the appropriate category for entry. (Last week, THR revealed the classifications for all other contenders.)

While one side finds “The Substance” to be a deeply unsettling horror movie, with graphic violence that even renowned director David Cronenberg might find too extreme. However, from another perspective, it’s also a sharp critique of an industry where youth and beauty are frequently valued above all else, serving as a biting satire on this subject.

Ultimately, the key factor could have been where Moore would have had the best chance at securing a nomination or even winning. If the movie was marketed as a drama, Moore would have likely faced off against some seasoned actresses like Angelina Jolie from “Maria”, Nicole Kidman from “Babygirl”, Saoirse Ronan from “The Outrun” and Tilda Swinton from “The Room Next Door”.

In the realm of comedy, it’s expected that Moore will face stiff competition from a few up-and-coming talents. These include Mikey Madison from Anora, Karla Sofía Gascón from Emilia Pérez’s project, potentially Cynthia Erivo from Wicked, Amy Adams from Nightbitch, and Zendaya from Challengers.
