As a movie aficionado, I must say that while the Oscars and Emmys are grand events filled with a dash of humor and plenty of emotional moments, the Golden Globes opt for a more laid-back approach to their award shows. In years past, hosts like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Sandra Oh, Andy Samberg, and Ricky Gervais have had no qualms about poking fun at the attendees or the biggest pop culture phenomena of the year. This year, it was comedian Nikki Glaser who took the reins, and she didn’t hesitate to take a swipe at one of the most disappointing comic book movies of the year – none other than “Joker: Folie à Deux“.
In her opening speech, Nikki Glaser humorously commented on the ongoing success of the musical “Wicked” in theaters, pointing out that some venues aren’t fond of audience members singing along during screenings. She then shifted her focus to Todd Phillips’ “Joker: Folie à Deux,” which underperformed significantly upon its release last year, following the widespread acclaim of the 2019 original. In jest, she remarked on the movie’s disappointing performance.
At Joker 2, some viewers found the visuals and sounds in the film to be disruptive.
In the film titled “Folie à Deux”, Joaquin Phoenix reprised his role as Arthur Fleck, with Lady Gaga portraying Harley Quinn, characteristically named Lee. The movie received mixed responses from both fans and critics, primarily due to its questionable script and musical sequences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a dismal 31%. Some might think that Glaser only told one joke and moved on, but that’s far from the truth. Just like “Folie à Deux”, Glaser came back for an additional, seemingly unnecessary sequel. She jokingly expressed regret for the movie, feigning remorse before flipping the narrative, stating:
“I’m sorry Joker 2, but…
“Where’s their table? Oh, they’re not here.”
2024 Was a Weird year for Superhero Movies/Shows
2024 marked an unusual period for the superhero genre with unexpected twists and turns. The highly anticipated sequel to “Joker”, titled “Joker: Folie à Deux“, was poised to continue its predecessor’s unique streak in the comic book movie genre (despite its roots in Martin Scorsese’s King of Comedy). However, the film underperformed at the box office, causing a shift in fan sentiment towards Phoenix, Gaga, and Phillips. A similar scenario unfolded with Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys”, as the penultimate season was met with mixed reactions, particularly in its early episodes. Despite regaining its audience base, the season fell short of the hype required for a successful launch into its fifth and final season. The Sony-produced “Spider-Man” villain-verse also faced challenges last year, with both films – “Madame Web” and “Kraven the Hunter” – receiving less than favorable reviews, making it hard to remember them positively.
As a movie aficionado, I must say that the dynamic duo, Deadpool and Wolverine, truly delivered on their promise, raking in impressive numbers at the box office to claim the title of the highest-rated R-rated movie ever – even outshining the critically acclaimed Joker. Yet, there’s still a lively discussion going on about whether this film is genuinely a masterpiece or not. But let me tell you, The Penguin, the HBO spin-off from The Batman in 2024, left no room for debate. Colin Farrell, brilliantly portraying the title character, earned a well-deserved Golden Globe for his outstanding performance as this iconic comic book villain.
