Gollum Movie Delayed Until 2027!

As a devoted fan, I eagerly await the continuation of the live-action “Lord of the Rings” cinematic universe, with Warner Bros. promising several new movies on the horizon, such as Andy Serkis’ “The Hunt for Gollum.” Unfortunately, it appears we must exercise patience a bit longer, as “The Hunt for Gollum,” initially set to hit theaters in December 2026, has faced a significant postponement. The director and actor himself, Andy Serkis, recently shared disappointing news regarding the film’s release date.

At Fan Expo Vancouver, Andy Serkis was questioned about the production of “The Hunt for Gollum.” He delivered some less-than-ideal news to the audience. In other words, it won’t be released in 2026 as previously speculated. Instead, fans will have to wait a full year until they can watch “The Hunt for Gollum”.

“It was originally going to be December 2026. It is going to be December 2027.”

Fans may have thought that the film “The Hunt for Gollum,” initially scheduled for a December 2026 release, would be well into production by this point. However, it seems that the production is actually significantly delayed beyond that timeline.

Serkis explained that we’re just starting the writing phase. We plan to prepare our materials later in the year. Preparation typically takes around six to seven months, after which we’ll begin filming next year. This timeline suggests a release date of December 2027.

What Is ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ About?

The announcement of “The Pursuit of Gollum” took place in May 2024. Unlike the previous year’s “The War of the Rohirrim”, which was set centuries prior to “The Fellowship of the Ring”, “The Pursuit of Gollum” will be set more closely to Peter Jackson’s beloved original trilogy. The movie is planned to unfold just before “The Fellowship of the Ring”, featuring unseen characters on a quest for the corrupted Stoor Hobbit, Gollum. Some speculate that the film might depict Gandalf’s first meeting with Gollum, an event he mentioned to Frodo in “The Return of the King”, though this remains unconfirmed.

It remains uncertain which, if any, familiar characters from the initial trilogy will be part of the upcoming movie, as the script development is just beginning. Fans have been informed that the film will primarily revolve around the enigmatic character of Gollum. In an earlier interview, the original director of “Lord of the Rings”, Peter Jackson, disclosed his reasons for finding Gollum such a compelling character and why the upcoming “Lord of the Rings” production will heavily feature him. Jackson stated:

I’ve been captivated by the Gollum/Sméagol character, as it represents the darkest aspects of humanity, yet his Sméagol persona is compassionate and relatable. I believe this duality resonates with readers and viewers, because we can see a reflection of both sides within ourselves.
