I must say, the TV schedule of 2025 has kicked off in an absolutely fantastic way! The blend of captivating awards shows and enthralling series debuts or comebacks have made this year a standout. And to top it all off, Thora Birch, who’s a big fan of ‘Hocus Pocus’, joining the cast of ‘Mayfair Witches‘ Season 2 alongside Alexandra Daddario is just the cherry on top! From her enthusiasm about the supernatural content to her appreciation for the stunning costumes, it’s clear that Thora is truly enjoying this magical journey.
The TV series based on Anne Rice’s “Mayfair Witches” books, which premiered on Netflix after much anticipation, is seeing a surge in popularity as its second season gets underway (with two episodes already released). Birch is among several new characters introduced to the cast as the suspenseful tale unfolds further. In an interview with TV Insider, Birch was questioned about her ties to the subject matter due to her character Dani’s connection to witchcraft in the original “Hocus Pocus” movie. When asked about her affinity for witches, Birch shared her thoughts on her fascination with the mystical realm:
For several years when I was 14 to 15, I falsely claimed to be a Wiccan, although it might not be that unusual for young women. I’ve always been fascinated by the supernatural, and at that time, I was an Anne Rice fan, particularly fond of her vampire stories and the allure of New Orleans. The show we’re working on now captures the charm of New Orleans in a similar way to how Anne Rice did, making it enjoyable to be part of. Aside from being on The Walking Dead, I’ve always preferred vampires over zombies. However, this interest in witchy stories has been more appealing to me because it allows for a visually playful exploration – think stylish clothes, beautiful jewelry, and you can’t go wrong!
It’s no wonder that the former star of “Ghost World” has an affinity for Wiccan practices and related topics, given her early collaboration with the Sanderson Sisters in “Hocus Pocus.” Considering the enduring popularity of this classic film, it seems fitting that she would find a home in the world of the Mayfair Witches. Despite being unable to participate in the sequel due to scheduling conflicts, joining a magical Rice universe appears to be an acceptable alternative for her.
As a cinema enthusiast who’s deeply into the supernatural, I must say that the AMC drama, although brimming with excitement and thrill, delves quite profoundly into the murkier aspects of the magical realm. Even Birch’s character isn’t exempt from this somber tone. If you’re seeking a break from the gloom, there are a plethora of cheerful witch movies and series designed for family viewing that can serve as a refreshing counterpoint to the grim events unfolding in Mayfair Witches.
It’s wonderful to learn that Thora Birch didn’t hang up her wand after Hocus Pocus. She fits perfectly and brings a wealth of experience to the Alexandra Daddario series. The fashion, accessories, and setting are also noteworthy. You can catch new episodes of Mayfair Witches every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on AMC or stream them via AMC+.
