Govinda’s wife Sunita recalls meeting actor as a schoolgirl when he was in college; says she was challenged to impress him

As an ardent fan who has followed Govinda’s journey from the silver screen to his personal life, I find myself utterly captivated by the heartwarming tale of their love story. The fact that they first met as a schoolgirl and a college-bound actor, with Sunita taking up a challenge to impress him, only adds to its charm.

Back in 1987, Govinda exchanged wedding vows with Sunita Munjal on March 11th. Since then, their life has been filled with endless laughter and unforgettable moments. However, it might surprise you how they initially crossed paths. In a recent interview on the Time Out with Ankit podcast, Sunita reminisced about her first encounter with Govinda. As a schoolgirl, she met him while he was in college and was even dared to try and impress him!

Sunita is the wife of Anand Singh, who is Govinda’s maternal uncle, and it was she who introduced Govinda to the film industry through her husband’s movie Tan-Badan (1986). The two first met at a wedding event of the filmmaker, when they were in Class 9 and final year of BCom respectively. Sunita shared that Anand Singh provided her with information about Govinda’s whereabouts.

It was shared that Govinda hailed from Virar in Maharashtra and was a humble man who held his mother dear. Sunita Ahuja further disclosed, “He also stated that no woman could capture his heart… When I told my brother-in-law I might be able to, he doubted it. So, I asked him what would happen if I did, and he dared me to demonstrate it first.

In case you’re unfamiliar, Sunita initially received the opportunity for Tan-Badan but declined. Subsequently, Khushbu Sundar joined the project instead. Notably, during the launch ceremony of this film, Sunita, Govinda, and her brother happened to be traveling together.

Sunita explained that her brother had taken a seat in the middle, and when I gently placed my hand on the headrest, I found Govinda’s hand already there. It turned out he was gently touching mine. Immediately, I decided to confront him. That’s how our romantic relationship started. They dated for three years before getting married when Sunita was only 18 years old.

The events transpired swiftly as Govinda’s mother, desiring to witness her youngest son (Govinda) married before she grew too old, hastened the proceedings. Exactly a year later, Sunita became a mother at 19; their firstborn was a daughter, who sadly passed away at just four months due to complications from premature birth. Now, it’s been four decades since they first met and thirty-seven years into their married life together.
