The MusiCares Person of the Year event, one of many pre-Grammy Award functions happening in Los Angeles before the February 2nd show, is set to honor the Grateful Dead on January 31st. According to insider sources, several well-known artists are involved, such as: Dead & Company, John Mayer, Mick Fleetwood with Stewart Copeland, Norah Jones, Maren Morris, Noah Kahan, Vampire Weekend, Sierra Farrell and Lukas Nelson, Dwight Yoakam, Billy Strings, My Morning Jacket, Sammy Hagar, the War and Treaty, and the War on Drugs. Additionally, Bruce Hornsby, a past collaborator of the Grateful Dead, is expected to attend, along with Andy Cohen, a friend of the band and host of Bravo TV, who will be hosting the event.
Information about the official announcement regarding the event, involving both the Recording Academy and the band, will be released shortly as we have contacted the event organizers.
Currently, Dead & Co. consists of original Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart, joined by John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, and Jeff Chimenti. Starting from 2024, Jay Lane has been temporarily replacing Bill Kreutzmann on the drums.
This year’s tribute is certain to be even more emotional as we, the extended Grateful Dead family, mourn the passing of a founding member last autumn – bassist Phil Lesh, who was 84 when he died in October. Moreover, August marks the 35th anniversary since Jerry Garcia, another founding member, passed away at the age of 53.
2024 was a monumental year for me as part of Dead & Co., a band I’m proud to be a part of. We made history by setting up camp at the cutting-edge Sphere in Las Vegas, performing under the title “Dead Forever.” Originally scheduled for 18 weekend gigs, we ended up playing an incredible 30 shows from May to August that year. This epic run raked in over $130 million and has paved the way for future acts to make the most of this tech-savvy venue’s immersive audio-visual features. This spring, we’re back at the Sphere to celebrate a decade with Dead & Co.
In light of the devastating wildfires that have razed entire L.A. neighborhoods, there’s never been a more apt time to admire the Grateful Dead’s lyrics – “We can make it through, we will persevere”. MusiCares has vowed to provide financial assistance for musicians and music industry professionals affected by these fires, as part of its Los Angeles Fire Relief Program. This event will also highlight MusiCares’ initiatives aimed at offering aid during such fire-related crises.
