Superhero films hold significant influence in the entertainment sector, however, not every release has been successful. One less-than-favorably remembered addition to this category is Martin Campbell’s “Green Lantern,” available for streaming with a Max subscription. The director recently suggested one major modification that could have enhanced the blockbuster, and I think he makes a valid point.
Fans who’ve followed DC movies sequentially will recall Ryan Reynolds’ brief stint as Green Lantern before shifting to Marvel for the Deadpool series (available with a Disney+ subscription). The film didn’t shine, but its director shared insights with ComicBook about one crucial aspect that could have made it better: giving Reynolds more control over the script. In his words:
Ryan is truly fantastic, and it was genuinely enjoyable collaborating with him on the film. Despite its challenges, it was a tough production, but working with both Ryan and Blake Lively was an absolute pleasure. He’s always so clever, as if I hadn’t mentioned this to another colleague – I can’t help but think he’d have excelled at writing the script! I believe he would have done an exceptional job.
In my viewpoint, given the right circumstances, this movie could’ve been quite successful. “Green Lantern” was generally an action film, but it fell short in terms of humor and emotional depth compared to what the “Deadpool” series has achieved. If Ryan Reynolds had a bit more creative input for the 2011 blockbuster, maybe it would have shared some similarities with the latter.
Indeed, it wasn’t just the absence of adult humor that worked against Green Lantern when it first appeared in cinemas more than a decade ago. The primary problem, perhaps, was that the narrative itself lacked the captivating appeal that a great story should have. Instead, it felt like a generic, cookie-cutter superhero origin tale. Moreover, the movie’s action sequences were hampered by an overreliance on visual effects.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but be excited about the upcoming portrayal of the Green Lantern Corps in DC’s movies and series. The initial lineup, known as Gods and Monsters, seems ripe with possibilities for our favorite green lanterns to make their mark. For instance, the cast of James Gunn’s Superman project includes Nathan Fillion as the roguish Guy Gardner, a Green Lantern indeed! Moreover, there’s also a Lanterns TV series in development.
Ryan Reynolds found his superhero niche as Deadpool, yet delivered a lively portrayal in Green Lantern. He’s frequently joked about the unsuccessful DC film for years, even incorporating jokes into Deadpool 2’s eccentric credit sequence. In one of those time-traveling moments, Wade Wilson travels back in time to prevent Ryan Reynolds from agreeing to play Hal Jordan before he became Green Lantern.
After the release of Deadpool 3, fans are speculating where Ryan Reynolds may appear in future Marvel films next, with Avengers: Doomsday being the most widely discussed fan theory. We’ll simply have to stay tuned for updates regarding his and the Green Lantern franchise’s future plans.
