It’s not a hidden fact that the 2011 Green Lantern movie didn’t live up to expectations critically and financially, but now this DC Comics character has another opportunity to shine in live-action. The Green Lantern series, titled Lanterns, set within the DC Universe, has started filming, and we’ve just received our first glimpse of Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. However, what truly piqued my interest is how this show fits into the broader DC Universe storyline.
How Kyle Chandler And Aaron Pierre Look In Lanterns
Although it’s yet to be revealed how Chandler’s Hal and Pierre’s John will appear in their Green Lantern costumes, we now have an idea of the civilian attire they’ll don when the series, Lanterns, commences.
Without Kyle Chandler’s Green Lantern ring adorning his finger, you might not guess that he and Aaron Pierre are part of the same TV series. Nonetheless, spotting the Green Lantern ring on him serves as a clue to fans that the show Lanterns is now filming. In this upcoming DC series, Hal Jordan and John Stewart find themselves entangled in a sinister, earthbound enigma as they delve into a murder case in the heartland of America. Picture it as a blend between True Detective and a tale of two cosmic police officers who harness the emerald power of willpower.
Lanterns Isn’t Closely Tied With The Deeper DCU Lore… For Now
Besides this image, Chris Mundy, the mastermind behind Lanterns, also engaged in a conversation with Vanity Fair regarding what viewers can anticipate from the series. Notably, this series is slated to follow Peacemaker Season 2 on the DCU’s live-action small screen. A quote from the man who previously guided Ozark particularly piqued my interest.
At the moment, we’re operating as a standalone narrative. Our first season has been crafted to offer a self-contained TV series, and our hope is that it will pave the way for multiple future seasons.
I must admit, I find myself intrigued yet puzzled by this assertion. When the first slate of the DC Universe (DCU) was unveiled in January 2023, Peter Safran, one of the co-heads of DC Studios, stated that the mystery Hal and John are investigating is crucial for leading us into the main narrative weaving through their films and TV series. However, Chris Mundy seems to suggest that the Lanterns will be distinct from other movies and TV shows within the DCU.
It seems possible that the vision for the project’s final outcome might need a tweak, but I remain optimistic that it will eventually weave a link to the richer DC Universe backstory. The question also lingers in my mind whether actor Nathan Fillion will reprise his role as Guy Gardner, the Green Lantern, in this summer’s Superman movie or not. Regarding the storyline for Lanterns, Chris Mundy shares the following:
In our Lantern series, you’ll find the rings with their associated powers, along with other characters and elements from the lore making an appearance or being referenced. The focus is on delving into these characters’ lives, both when they’re working and off-duty, providing a fascinating exploration for those new to the mythology as well as long-time fans who know it inside out.
Mundy is teaming up with the Eisner Award-winning comic book author Tom King and Damon Lindelof, who co-created shows like “Lost” and “The Leftovers”, for the project titled “Lanterns”. The cast includes Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Ulrich Thomsen. Interestingly, Thomsen will be portraying Sinestro in this series. Similar to “The Penguin”, “Lanterns” will initially air on HBO before it becomes accessible for streaming with a Max subscription.
As a cinephile eagerly anticipating the silver screen, I can’t help but share my excitement for the forthcoming DC Studios productions. While the precise release date for “Lanterns” remains undisclosed, Peter Safran and James Gunn, the dynamic duo at the helm of DC Studios, have hinted that we might expect it gracing our cinemas as early as 2026.
Adding fuel to the fire, next year promises a double dose of DC delight with “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” and “Clayface”. I, for one, can hardly wait!
