Greta Gerwig & Netflix Clash Over Theatrical Release for Narnia Reboot

Greta Gerwig & Netflix Clash Over Theatrical Release for Narnia Reboot

As a film critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Greta Gerwig’s upcoming remake of The Chronicles of Narnia deserves nothing less than a grand theatrical release. Having witnessed the magic of her previous works such as Lady Bird and Little Women on the silver screen, I am certain that Narnia will be no exception.

Even as Greta Gerwig continues to shift between significant film franchises, including her long-discussed reimagining of The Chronicles of Narnia, it appears that her upcoming movie won’t be gracing the big screen anytime soon. The rumors about Gerwig’s Narnia remake have been circulating since her impressive work on Barbie. In collaboration with Netflix, Gerwig is embarking on a multi-million dollar adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ cherished novels. However, there seems to be a disagreement between the parties regarding the release date.

As reported by Matthew Belloni in his newsletter What I’m Hearing, Greta Gerwig is advocating for a traditional cinema release of her upcoming adaptation of Narnia. However, sources claim that Netflix prefers to debut the film on their streaming platform. Given Gerwig’s passion for the cinematic experience and her history in independent filmmaking, it’s not surprising she’d prefer a theatrical release. Nevertheless, Netflix continues to prioritize releasing content directly onto its streaming service, as demonstrated by films from directors like Martin Scorsese and Rian Johnson.

Despite concerns expressed by Greta Gerwig regarding the release strategy for Narnia, indications are that her relationship with Netflix remains friendly. This should not alarm fans about the potential reboot being postponed again, although further discussions about this matter may become public knowledge in the future. It’s likely that Gerwig will continue advocating for a theatrical release, as suggested by the report’s comment that “she seems disappointed.” Although the specifics of the report are not yet verified, it can be assumed that Gerwig has valid arguments to make given the upcoming Narnia release in cinemas.

Greta Gerwig’s Chronicles of Narnia Needs a Theatrical Release

It wouldn’t be fair for Narnia to skip a theatrical release when Netflix is skilled at transforming popular fantasy realms into movies and shows that stream right to our TVs. After all, productions like Greta Gerwig’s Narnia could miss out on significant earnings if they only appear on streaming platforms. For instance, films such as Little Women and Lady Bird were moderately successful commercially, but Barbie truly lit up cinemas worldwide by surpassing the $1 billion mark. This global success was not only due to the Barbie brand or Margot Robbie’s brilliant portrayal of the iconic doll, but also because it drew in a new audience for Gerwig’s work. Given this surge in followers, Netflix would be making a mistake by not leveraging Greta Gerwig’s theatrical draw – even among casual moviegoers – by not offering a theatrical release for Narnia.

Beyond monetary benefits, a movie based on The Chronicles of Narnia, whichever book Gerwig decides to adapt, was essentially designed for the cinema. With Gerwig in charge, launching Narnia straight to streaming is akin to debuting Denis Villeneuve’s Dune on a smart TV. Granted, we can’t imagine what that viewing experience would be like, naturally.
