The actress that portrayed Dr. April Kepner was released from the ABC medical drama following season 14 in 2018, concurrently with Jessica Capshaw who played Dr. Arizona Robbins. Not long after her departure, the spin-off series of Grey’s Anatomy, titled B-Team – which Drew helmed as director – received an Emmy nomination.
Drew explained on a recent episode of the Call It What It Is podcast, hosted by Capshaw and Camilla Luddington, that we were dismissed rudely, leaving us feeling mistreated. The response, however, was incredibly heartwarming; it seemed as though people were paying tribute to us, such was the magnitude of love shown.
In an earlier conversation with Vulture, she compared feeling victorious after receiving an Emmy nomination following her departure from the show to “attending my own funeral.” Although her self-assurance took a hit post-dismissal, Drew shared with The Hollywood Reporter in 2018 that the nomination served as a “powerful confirmation” of her abilities.
The nomination later on made me think, ‘I don’t have to worry or doubt myself,'” the actress stated earlier. “I’m not just focusing on acting anymore; I’m now stepping into the roles of director and producer as well. The world seems limitless to me. Above all else, the past few weeks since my final episodes have felt like a beautiful reawakening and an incredibly thrilling period.
Drew’s departure from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ took everyone by surprise, including the actress herself and the show’s fans. In an interview with THR, she explained that her dismissal was due to the series having too many characters, making it difficult for the writers to give each character their deserved spotlight. They aimed to avoid leaving anyone in the background with minimal storylines.
Consequently, the actress who starred in “Cagney and Lacey” reappeared in the popular medical drama, featuring in seasons 17 and 18. Moreover, she expressed on the “Call It What It Is” podcast that her return to the series was remarkably liberating.
Drew made it clear he has no emotional connection to the show whatsoever,” he said. “Going back wasn’t nerve-wracking because I don’t depend on them for my career or happiness anymore. They’re not in charge of my wellbeing or achievements. Instead, I view it as a pleasant place to drop by.
In another part of the podcast discussion, it was disclosed that Drew’s character originally planned an unexpected romantic encounter with Eric Dane’s character, Mark Sloan, during the seventh season.
Initially, the writers planned for my character (April) instead of mine to have a one-night stand with Sloan (played by Nora Zehetner). This scene was originally intended for April. However, as the script evolved, the plans changed and the scene ended up featuring someone else. I wasn’t involved in the decision-making process, but the writers ultimately decided to alter their initial choice.
