Grey’s Anatomy Fans Are Both Angry And Hopeful After That Carina Name-Drop, And I’m Conflicted About What It Could Mean

As a longtime fan of Grey’s Anatomy and someone who has spent countless hours dissecting every plot twist and character development, I can’t help but feel a rollercoaster of emotions when it comes to Carina DeLuca’s mysterious absence. The mention of her name in the recent episode was like a sweet, tantalizing morsel that only leaves me hungrier for more.

❗️Be advised: The story ahead may reveal small spoilers about the October 10th episode of Grey’s Anatomy titled “I Can See Clearly Now. You can watch this episode, which has minor plot reveals, by subscribing to Hulu for streaming access.

In the 2024 TV lineup, Grey’s Anatomy brought back Jason George as Ben Warren following Station 19’s cancellation this year. However, showrunner Meg Marinis has been vague about Stefania Spampinato and her character’s fate, so it’s not surprising that Carina DeLuca hasn’t appeared yet. It was exciting, then, to hear her mentioned twice in “I Can See Clearly Now.” Fans are unsure what to think of the references, as they expressed both frustration and optimism in their reactions.

At the start of the October 10th episode, Jo (Camilla Luddington) told Link (Chris Carmack) that she was planning to consult a doctor outside Grey Sloan for her pregnancy, to preserve some confidentiality. Link seemed confused by her decision, expressing his puzzlement with this statement:

It’s your call. But if I had a vagina, I’d want Carina DeLuca all over it.

Mentioning Carina’s name sparked intense reactions across the fandom, as it often does, and it’s clear why initial feelings might have been of frustration. On Twitter, one fan expressed this by saying…

Ben Warren’s comeback to Grey’s Anatomy seemed to be foreshadowed in the finale of Station 19, but there hasn’t been much information about Carina since Meg Marinis simply stated she “lives in this world,” which we already know because Stefania Spampinato has been a part of Grey’s Anatomy and has consistently appeared every season, despite being a regular on Station 19.

Hearing her mentioned on the episode only reminded fans of her absence. Other reactions included:

  • It’s supposed to be funny, but actually makes me mad. They really don’t deserve Carina Deluca 😢 – rkfly
  • We live in a world where we have to live off Carina DeLuca crumbs – mayabishvp

As the episode unfolded, Jo appeared to undergo a transformation in her feelings. By the finale, she confided in Link that she had come to the conclusion that giving up some privacy would be a small price to pay for ensuring Carina received the finest care possible. Could it be that Jo is referring to their unborn child, Carina? I’m guessing that’s correct!

A social media post gained significant attention as it announced that Carina, who had been referenced twice previously by Link, seems set to look after Jo. This development has rekindled anticipation among fans that they might indeed witness Carina again in the future.

If Stefania Spampinato is not present in the current season, it would have been straightforward for them to let Jo stick with her initial choice of seeking help elsewhere. However, since she hasn’t, there’s increased enthusiasm among fans that Carina might return, as evidenced by their posts expressing optimism.

  • WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?????????? WHY AM I ALREADY CLOWNING??????? CARINA DELUCA WILL BE BACK??? – dearprepon
  • Okay okay okay so does that mean we’re getting Carina back?!?!? – haleytogo
  • I want to see Jo and Carina go through their pregnancies together. Especially with them both being OBs. – KittyKat3801

I’m still uncertain about the implications of Carina being mentioned, and I’m not fully convinced that she will make an appearance in this current season. Despite the hints that were dropped, if Meg Marinis intended for Carina to be part of the show this season, why was it kept as a secret when they were so open about Ben Warren’s return?

The series has paved the way for maintaining characters in name but not presence. In Season 17, there were strong indications that Sandra Oh might return as Cristina Yang following five mentions, a text conversation between Cristina and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd), and several other original cast members reappearing as Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) battled COVID. However, it’s been clarified that Oh has no plans to resume the role. Fool me once, Grey’s Anatomy, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

Indeed, whether Stefania Spampinato will reappear on Grey’s Anatomy remains to be seen as time goes by, so keep an eye out for future episodes, which might include more passionate tales in a later timeslot, airing every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
