As a seasoned Grey’s Anatomy fan with over a decade of emotional investment in this rollercoaster ride of a show, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and trepidation as we gear up for season 21. The return of Jackson Avery and the reappearance of Dr. Sydney Heron, a character I vaguely remember from my early years in fandom, has me both excited and slightly confused.
In a fresh glimpse at the upcoming season 21 of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, we find Jesse Williams reprising his cherished role as Jackson Avery, while tension escalates at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital following the intense conclusion of season 20.
In this exclusive footage given to People, viewers catch a peek of Dr. Sydney Heron, played by Kali Rocha, showcasing her signature passive-aggressiveness for the first time since 2007, when she departed from the ABC medical drama. (Paraphrased)
In a brief sneak peek at the upcoming season, Dr. Heron, portrayed by Rocha, is shown addressing the interns and encouraging them to view her as one of them since she was once a resident at the hospital herself. “Who’s eager to heal with love?” she asks, followed by a warm embrace with Chandra Wilson’s character, Dr. Miranda Bailey, hinting at their shared mission.
In a surprising twist, it’s been hinted that Jesse Williams’ character, Dr. Jackson Avery, will reappear in some form during Season 21. However, it appears that his relationship with Ellen Pompeo’s character, Dr. Meredith Grey, has become strained following the events of the Season 20 finale, as he seems less than pleased with her.
Last season, rather than entrusting my groundbreaking Alzheimer’s research on the link with gut microbiome health to Tom Koracick as I had intended, Catherine Fox, in a surprising turn of events, decided to let me and Dr. Amelia Shepherd go instead. (First person perspective)
A glance at season 21 preview features a moment where Bailey and Catherine’s relationship strain reaches its peak, following the events of the season 20 finale when Bailey intervened and prevented Catherine from dismissing Lucas Adams (played by Niko Terho), who she had intended to fire.
Catherine questions Bailey, ‘Do you believe yourself to be some sort of divine intervention for this hospital?’ She quickly counters with, ‘You’re simply another doctor,’ a remark that earns her a swift slap from Grey’s Anatomy’s renowned character.
Towards the end of the preview, Catherine can be heard telling Meredith that she intends to sue her over published work that was funded by the Fox Foundation. In characteristic Meredith style, she replies, “My legal team is aware of my whereabouts.
Grey’s Anatomy season 21 premieres on Sept. 26.
