Grey’s Anatomy Season 22: What Happened to Jackson Avery?

In the concluding moments of Grey’s Anatomy season 21, several storylines require resolution, yet season 22 must also delve into the enigma surrounding a particular character whose future was left unanswered prior to the finale. The tumultuous cases handled by Amelia in Grey’s Anatomy season 21 finale were intensified when Jenna Gatlin intervened and arbitrated when Amelia’s team could perform surgery again on Dylan.

Although it appeared that the crisis had a tranquil resolution, Jenna’s actions undeniably sparked the explosion during the finale of Grey’s Anatomy season 21, and this unintentionally convinced Meredith to invest more time in Seattle. This circumstance inevitably brought another period into focus when Meredith was there due to her Alzheimer’s research, securing what she desired but leaving a different character utterly clueless.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Needs To Reveal What Happened To Jackson Avery

Jackson Appeared In Grey’s Anatomy Season 21’s Premiere & His Story Was Left Hanging

In the debut of season 21 of Grey’s Anatomy, Jackson Avery came back, hoping to mediate the conflict between Meredith and Catherine. The conflict arose when Meredith made public her research findings, a move opposed by Catherine due to the unconventional approach that led to the results. However, despite Jackson’s significant role in resolving the dispute, his future remained uncertain as Meredith persuaded Catherine to allow her to leave freely, by treating her secretly.

Meredith found it challenging to interact with Jackson because she was obligated to conceal Catherine’s deteriorating health from him, which was part of her agreement with Catherine. Meanwhile, the fact that Meredith and Catherine made a deal might have appeared strange to Jackson, as he wasn’t aware of its specifics, considering Meredith had the option to depart from the foundation at any time.

Given that Jackson was unaware of Meredith’s actions on Catherine’s behalf and Catherine’s relentless spirit, the apparent deal between Meredith (seeming to have received her desires) and the Fox Foundation, where they didn’t seem to lose out, would never be comprehensible to Jackson. Consequently, the cliffhanger of season 21, with Jackson’s storyline left unresolved, necessitated the continuation of his tale in season 22.

In the 21st season of Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith’s secret treatment of Catherine led to significant issues in her relationship with Richard. This dispute persisted for nearly half the season. However, it’s important to note that not only Richard, but also Jackson, would have been affected by the secrecy surrounding Catherine’s health, as Catherine had previously been secretive about the progression of her illness with them both.

In the 21st season of Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith and Richard finally had a chance to discuss Catherine’s secret that Meredith had kept from Richard. However, there was no opportunity for a discussion with Jackson, as Meredith effectively cut him off without providing any explanation. Therefore, it is essential for the 22nd season of Grey’s Anatomy to address the long-overdue argument between Meredith and Jackson that has been left unresolved.

While Meredith’s decision to protect Catherine’s secret was morally sound, it unfortunately compromised Jackson’s trust. This upcoming disagreement between them is complex, as not only has Meredith distanced herself from him, but she also took her research without providing an explanation to Jackson, who has long been dedicated to finding a cure for Alzheimer’s and facilitated Meredith’s research in the process.

Meredith’s Alzheimer’s Research Wouldn’t Have Started As Easily Without Jackson

Jackson Avery Is The Reason Meredith Was Able To Move As Easily To Boston

Grey’s Anatomy consistently showcased Meredith’s deep affection for her Alzheimer’s research, yet this pursuit might not have materialized without Jackson and the Fox Foundation. Initially, Meredith was primarily focused on finding the ideal school for Zola, even considering such a notion as absurd when it came to pursuing Alzheimer’s research with the aim of discovering a cure.

Through Jackson’s persuasive efforts and showing Meredith the resources at Boston’s Fox Foundation, he managed to persuade her to investigate Alzheimer’s disease – an illness that significantly impacted her life. Initially overwhelmed by Zola’s worries, Meredith didn’t immediately grasp how studying Alzheimer’s could benefit her daughter; however, Jackson helped Meredith understand that researching Alzheimer’s would also help Zola in some way.

When the foundation’s backing was withdrawn, Meredith realized how challenging it could be to obtain funding. However, she never faced that struggle initially because Jackson was eager to be part of the research Meredith led. Unfortunately, at a time when Meredith should have valued Jackson’s viewpoint more, she was so focused on getting rid of Catherine’s influence, that she overlooked the significant role Jackson played in her success by investing in her work.

It’s worth bringing back Grey’s Anatomy for its 22nd season to continue Jackson’s story, given the significant role he played in Meredith and Amelia’s Alzheimer’s research progress, as well as the fact that his absence was noticeable in season 21. This suggests that the show didn’t fully end Jackson’s narrative, but rather put it on hold.

How Jackson Avery’s Presence Can Resolve Meredith’s Problems With Her Research

Meredith’s Research Problems Are Far From Finished Given Its Magnitude

In the final episode of season 21, Grey’s Anatomy portrayed Meredith’s unwavering commitment to ensuring her research progressed. She went as far as cutting ties with Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital to secure funding for her preferred research projects, instead of adhering to her investors’ wishes. However, the money she received from selling her shares will not last indefinitely, potentially leading to financial hardship for Meredith and her family once more.

This development welcomes Jackson’s return to collaborating with Meredith and Amelia on Alzheimer’s research, considering that their initial findings established the credibility of their research, something they lacked when the Fox Foundation first began funding it. This could lead to a more equitable partnership in their future collaboration, as they can now share their mutual expectations from the outset.

Given Jackson’s essential contributions and Meredith’s financial constraints versus a massive foundation, reuniting for collaboration seems unavoidable. Yet, this time around they can apply their learnings from past errors, resulting in a fruitful alliance that could bring joy to Meredith, Amelia, and Jackson in the upcoming season 22 of Grey’s Anatomy.
