Grey's Anatomy Star Sarah Drew Reflects on Emotional Exit from ABC Drama

As a long-time fan of Grey’s Anatomy, I must say that Sarah Drew’s journey with the show is both heartwarming and perplexing. On one hand, it’s inspiring to see her flourish after her unexpected departure, earning an Emmy nomination and making peace with the situation. On the other, it’s disheartening to hear about her feelings of confusion and injustice during her exit.

Actress Sarah Drew is looking back on her departure from the cherished ABC medical series following nine seasons. Drew joined the cast as Dr. April Kepner in 2009 and was surprisingly released close to a decade later after Season 14. Now, she’s revealing additional insights for fans eager to understand the reasons behind her farewell.

In 2018, Drew and Jessica Capshaw, who portrayed Dr. Arizona Robbins for ten seasons on Grey’s Anatomy, were given scripts that didn’t include their characters anymore. This unexpected turn left Drew feeling perplexed and disquieted. She later discussed her emotional farewell on the Call It What It Is podcast, which is co-hosted by Capshaw and another former co-star, Camilla Luddington. The exit took both Drew and the show’s longtime viewers by surprise, as reported by Variety. In her own words:

We were abruptly dismissed in a manner that seemed harsh and unfair, which led to such an overwhelming display of affection, it felt as if we were attending our own memorial service.

Following her departure, Drew’s directorial work on the shortform series “B-Team” for Grey’s Anatomy received an Emmy nomination. In 2018, she shared with The Hollywood Reporter, “The nomination afterwards made me think, ‘I don’t have to worry about anything or lose my confidence.’ I’m not just pursuing my acting career, but I’m now also stepping into the roles of director and producer. The world is vast and full of opportunities for me.

Dr. April Kepner Was Originally Set for One-Night Stand with Major Character

In the podcast discussion, Drew disclosed an unexpected detail concerning Dr. April Kepner’s character from Grey’s Anatomy: originally, she was intended to have a one-time encounter with Eric Dane’s character, Mark Sloan (also known as “McSteamy”), during season seven. She clarified that this romantic scene was initially part of the script but was eventually removed. Previously, the actress from Cagney and Lacey had informed THR that her dismissal was solely based on creative reasons. Drew elaborated on this by stating:

I learned that the production team felt there were too many characters in the show, making it difficult for each character to have their own well-developed storyline. To ensure no actor is sidelined or underutilized, they decided to reduce the number of characters.

After finding a sense of acceptance with the situation, Drew reappeared on the show in seasons 17 and 18. On the podcast, he clarified, “I have no emotional bond to it whatsoever.” He added, “There was absolutely no apprehension [about returning] because I don’t require anything from anyone associated with that set anymore.

Grey’s Anatomy” holds the record as the longest-running prime-time medical drama series on television. The network, ABC, announced the commencement of its twenty-first season in April, which aired on September 26. New episodes are broadcast every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET.
