Springtime is a tense period for network TV series without early renewals, but it was still startling to witness NBC canceling shows even before halfway through the 2025 television schedule. Although I wasn’t entirely shocked by certain shows receiving unfortunate news, I had held positive expectations for some others that won’t be returning.

Currently, NBC hasn’t made a decision about the future of my beloved network TV drama, Grosse Pointe Garden Society, as the Season 1 finale approaches in just a few days. The show creators have dismissed rumors that their move to Friday nights means they’re doomed, and with the end of the season quickly approaching, we’re seeing more and more revelations unfold.

I’m anxious about the garden club’s future following a wave of cancellations, but I cling to optimism, comparing its potential revival to Christopher Meloni’s Law & Order: Organized Crime. This could mean transitioning from NBC primetime broadcasts to an original series exclusively available on Peacock for those with subscriptions, based on my conversations with the showrunners. Here’s why I hold this hope.

All Of NBC’s Spring Cancellations (So Far)

To begin with, it’s worth noting that while CBS made some surprising cancellations last year with shows like “NCIS: Hawai’i” and “So Help Me Todd”, this year NBC takes the cake for most shocking cancelations. On May 9 alone, they pulled the plug on five series: “The Irrational”, “Found”, “Suits LA”, “Night Court”, and “Lopez vs. Lopez”.

frankly, I wasn’t surprised when shows like Lopez vs Lopez and Suits LA were canceled, given that it had been several months since the Season 3 finale of George Lopez’s sitcom without any positive updates, and despite bringing on actors such as Gabriel Macht and Rick Hoffman, the Stephen Amell-led legal drama failed to generate the same excitement as its predecessor.

Initially, it appeared that Found might thrive in the old time slot of Law & Order: Organized Crime, and the creators of The Irrational were hopeful about a potential third season. However, what really caught me off guard was the fate of Night Court. This wasn’t just due to John Larroquette’s exciting ideas for Season 4, but also because the sitcom often attracted high-profile guest stars. Interestingly, both Happy’s Place and St. Denis Medical had been renewed by NBC. Unfortunately, it seems that the court is no longer in session.

It’s true that NBC isn’t the sole network to axe several shows this spring, but cancelling five all at once certainly raises my concern. This leads me to discuss the show “Grosse Pointe Garden Society”.

What The Co-Showrunner Told Us About Grosse Pointe Garden Society

From the moment I chatted with producer Casey Kyber about assembling an exceptional cast and the strategic pairing with Suits LA on Sundays, I sensed that Grosse Pointe Garden Society would quickly win me over. The murder mystery was intriguing, and the blend of drama and humor was right up my alley. Discovering the identity of “Quiche,” our unfortunate victim, made the wait worthwhile. By the end of 2025, GPGS had climbed to the top spot among new network TV shows for me.

Although it was reassuring that GPGS avoided cancellation on May 9, it’s unfortunate that it doesn’t have a place in the upcoming fall schedule, with “On Brand with Jimmy Fallon” occupying the 8 p.m. ET Friday slot instead. However, there’s still cause for optimism, as I had a conversation with co-showrunner Bill Krebs regarding the possibility of Grosse Pointe Garden Society transitioning from NBC to streaming and becoming an original series on Peacock. He hinted at this potential move during our discussion.

Initially, our plan involved linking up with Suits LA and creating a Sunday night show. However, we soon discovered that the 10 p.m. time slot on network television is challenging due to the abundance of streaming options, allowing viewers to watch shows at their convenience instead of staying up late. NBC moved us from Sunday at 10 p.m. to Friday at 8 p.m., a decision partly made so that they could release the episode on Peacock each Saturday morning for viewers’ convenience.

It doesn’t seem like this show is one that a network is eagerly planning to cancel, nor does it appear destined for cancellation like Suits LA. In fact, as stated by Jenna Bans, Kreb’s co-showrunner, the shift to Fridays was made with the intention of attracting more viewers and encouraging them to catch up on Peacock.

Our show is designed for weekly viewing, meaning viewers can catch the new episode on Saturday or Sunday. However, if it were released on Mondays, people would have to wait until the next weekend. The series structure encourages audiences to keep up with each episode as they are released. To boost viewership and encourage binge-watching, the show was made available on Peacock, a streaming platform. We’ve even considered that this type of show might perform better on Peacock than it would on NBC, and we’ve talked about this possibility with them.

Currently, I had a conversation with the co-showrunners around late April, therefore I’m unaware of any potential NBC-to-Peacock talks that may have occurred since then. Nonetheless, there are numerous logical and creative factors that make Grosse Pointe Garden Society an appealing choice for a serialized show on Peacock. The question remains, however, whether the viewership numbers would be sufficient to warrant such a move.

Absolutely, I share that sentiment! The shift from NBC to Peacock has indeed been exciting for Law & Order: Organized Crime, and it’s not just because Rick Gonzalez’s character Reyes can now use stronger language. If the same freedom is granted to Grosse Pointe Garden Society, I’ll definitely be tuning in online!

Regardless of what’s coming up, there is still one more episode to be aired on NBC for the Grosse Pointe Garden Society. The Season 1 finale will be broadcast on Friday, May 16 at 8 p.m. ET, and as always, it will be streamable the next day on Peacock.
