As a movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen it all – from the sublime to the ridiculous. And let me tell you, Adam Sandler’s “Grown Ups” falls squarely into the latter category. Critics panned it like a hot potato in 2010, but as we all know, even a stopped clock is right twice a day. This film has found new life on Hulu and, to my dismay, has become a hit among viewers.

The humor-filled films by this creator have varied from exceptional to disappointing, and one of the latter, as criticized initially, is currently enjoying unprecedented popularity following its addition to Hulu. Released in 2010, it was a blockbuster at the box office but didn’t garner the same appreciation in reviews. Notwithstanding the mixed reception, this movie has found a new fanbase upon its introduction on a fresh streaming service.

The movie titled “Grown Ups” boasts an impressive roster of stars like Chris Rock, Salma Hayek, Kevin James, and Rob Schneider. Despite this, it failed to garner positive feedback from critics. The plot revolves around a band of old friends reuniting following the demise of their basketball coach. Their summer getaway at a lakeside home, however, becomes a source of conflict for several of them, as disagreements flare up and typical mayhem reminiscent of many Adam Sandler films ensues. In the end, things manage to work out relatively well for the characters, and the film’s success was sufficient to warrant a sequel in 2013.

Despite not being his absolute lowest-rated film, critics found much to criticize in the movie titled “Grown Ups“. Many described it as a “painful squandering of talent” and felt that there were only a few “moderately amusing moments” to keep it afloat. Similar to many of Adam Sandler’s comedies from the 2010s, this film didn’t introduce anything fresh, instead adhering to a well-worn formula that resulted in a mere 10% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This led critics to label it as “uninspired” and lacking in creativity.

Adam Sandler is Looking to Nostalgia with Upcoming Sequel

In contrast to the harsh reviews from critics, who gave Grown Ups 2 a paltry 8% score on the Tomatometer, audiences seemed more forgiving towards both films. The original Grown Ups received a rating of 64%, while its sequel saw a slight dip to 53%. However, neither film was the critical flop that it appeared to be. It seems that Sandler is now aiming for a more positive reception with his upcoming movie sequel on Netflix.

The anticipated sequel is titled Happy Gilmore 2, the long-awaited follow-up to the 1996 hit film. The original movie was one of Sandler’s highest-rated films, a fact that remains true today, despite past rumors about a sequel. With his current deal with Netflix, it’s finally becoming a reality. However, the question remains whether the passage of three decades might diminish viewers’ interest in another Happy Gilmore movie.

At present, there’s an ongoing romance between viewers and sequels that hark back to past classics, making it a logical move for Adam Sandler to revisit one of his iconic roles from the 1990s. Given the original cast members’ return and Netflix’s strong support, it seems unlikely that another successful Sandler project won’t come to fruition.
