GTA 6 could be good news for Mafia: The Old Country’s release

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that the gaming industry has never ceased to surprise me. The unexpected reveal of Mafia: The Old Country at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024 was undoubtedly one for the history books.

On August 20th, an extraordinary find awaited us in our bed – a horse’s head! As Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024 concluded with its final shocker, it was time for another surprise from the expert himself, Geoff Keighley. With big reveals like Borderlands 4 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle making its way to PS5, the stage was set for one more unexpected announcement.

As a gamer, I’ve been eagerly anticipating Hangar 13’s next move, and now it seems they’re taking us back to where it all began – witnessing the meteoric rise of those ruthless mobsters. Many gamers, including myself, are relieved that we won’t be revisiting the mediocre Mafia III. Instead, we’re off to Sicily for an authentic slice of life in Mafia: The Old Country.

Mafia: The Old Country could be coming sooner than expected

Mafia 4 was just announced at Gamescom, and that has me thinking something about GTA VI’s release

1. Mafia: The Old Country was an excellent finale for Opening Night Live, and with a tentative 2025 release date, it’s another big-budget game joining the lineup for next year. Gamers on the GTA 6 subreddit speculate that Mafia: The Old Country might be coming soon.

It’s undeniable that GTA 6 could very well be the most significant video game in 2025, perhaps even the largest ever made. Consequently, it seems likely that people will be eagerly awaiting its arrival, which happens to be slated for a Fall 2025 release by Take-Two Interactive – the company behind this highly anticipated automotive adventure.

The Old Country is developed by Hangar 13, who are also known for being part of Take-Two Interactive (the same company that creates Grand Theft Auto), fans believe that the game may be released as early as 2025. This speculation arises because GTA 6 is expected to release around the same time, and it seems like Hangar 13 might want to avoid direct competition with their own game by releasing Mafia: The Old Country earlier. It’s also suggested that Mafia: The Old Country has been in development for quite some time and is almost ready for release.

Rumors about a prequel to the Mafia series have been circulating since 2022. At that time, it was hinted that the storyline of what was then called Mafia 4 would revolve around Don Salieri and the emergence of the mafia in Sicily. There were even whispers that development on both Mafia 4 and a possible Mafia 5 (later known as The Old Country) might have started simultaneously.

With someone in the comments noting, “Take-Two is about to make a gazillion next year lol,” let’s also remember that Borderlands 4 is a Take-Two release. Similar to Mafia: The Old Country, could we see the next Borderlands releasing early in 2025, hoping to get swallowed up by the inevitable gaming black hole of GTA 6? Here’s hoping we won’t be waiting too long for either.
