GTA 6 could leave fans 'disappointed', according to ex-Rockstar dev

As a long-time fan of the Grand Theft Auto series, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of GTA 6 since the day the rumors started swirling. With such a lengthy gap between games, my excitement is at an all-time high. The prospect of returning to Vice City for another installment in this iconic franchise is almost too good to be true.

In approximately 12 years from now, around 2025, we anticipate that GTA 6 will be launched (fingers crossed!). It’s been quite a while since we last had a Grand Theft Auto game, and we’re eagerly waiting for the next installment in the series. Despite the continued financial success of GTA Online’s automotive escapades, we’re excited to revisit Vice City for the upcoming chapter in this beloved franchise.

After a 12-year wait, fans are eagerly anticipating something extraordinary when Grand Theft Auto 6 eventually comes out. Although Grand Theft Auto V received upgrades with its expanded and enhanced edition released in 2022, the expectations for GTA 6 are sky-high due to its potential as a next-generation game.

Ex-Rockstar dev warns we might be ‘disappointed‘ by GTA 6

Obbe Vermeij, a veteran game developer who previously worked at Rockstar and contributed to the original Vice City, has expressed his views on the future direction of the series. While Vermeij’s background is impressive, those hoping for groundbreaking advancements may need to adjust their anticipation, according to him.

When talking to SanInPlay, Vermeij expressed his thoughts, “It seems like they’ve advanced GTA 5 even more, doesn’t it?” Although he finds the beach scene in the GTA 6 trailer striking due to individual animations, he believes, “I find that quite impressive. But I don’t think it will be drastically different from GTA 5.”

Vermeij cautions that fans might be setting unrealistic expectations for GTA 6, remarking, “I believe some people may feel let down initially. But make no mistake, it will still be an exceptional game” He acknowledges that surpassing the innovation of San Andreas to GTA IV was a significant challenge and repeating such a feat could be more difficult.

According to Vermeij, making the same progress again will be more challenging due to technology advancing more gradually. He pointed out that the leap from PS1 to PS2 was significant, whereas the transition from PS4 to PS5 is not as pronounced. Yet, despite acknowledging that GTA 6 may not be drastically different from GTA 5, he remains optimistic about its potential greatness.

Although Vermeij has contributed significantly to some of Rockstar’s greatest games, he lacks inside knowledge about the development of GTA 6. Meanwhile, the anticipation for this highly-anticipated game is at an all-time high due to advanced AI and graphics expected in a next-gen title. However, with GTA 6 being hailed as one of the most significant game launches ever, we have faith in Rockstar’s abilities.
