GTA 6 fans worried strikes could affect its 2025 release

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve witnessed firsthand how strikes in the entertainment industry can significantly impact the release dates and production of eagerly anticipated projects. The 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America Strike and the more recent 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike serve as stark reminders of this reality.

For individuals with ample experience, it’s common knowledge that strikes can significantly harm the entertainment industry. The Writers Guild of America strike from 2007-2008 brought the industry to a standstill, while the more recent SAG-AFTRA strike in 2023 proved fatal for movies and television productions.

The previous year’s labor dispute delayed the launch schedules for various titles including Deadpool, Wolverine, and The Last of Us Part II. With potential new strikes emerging, the video game sector may face disruptions once more.

According to Inverse’s report, SAG-AFTRA members acting in video games are launching a strike on July 26. This decision follows 18 months of unsuccessful contract talks. The primary concerns for the strikers are reportedly the excessive use of AI to create replicas of their likenesses.

As a passionate fan, I can’t help but share some exciting and potentially impactful news in first person! If you’re as big a gaming enthusiast as me, get ready for some intriguing updates regarding major publishers like Electronic Arts, Disney, and Take-Two Interactive. Among them, Take-Two Interactive holds a special place, being the mastermind behind iconic franchises such as Grand Theft Auto.

Starting today, progress on titles with AI involvement cannot move forward until the contractual terms regarding AI use are explicitly stated. This situation may lead to significant consequences. Although Take-Two has consistently scheduled the launch of GTA 6 for 2025, this recent announcement has left fans feeling uneasy.

Fran Drescher, President of SAG-AFTRA, expresses, “We won’t agree to a contract that lets businesses misuse AI at the expense of our actors. That’s enough. Once these companies are prepared with an acceptable agreement for our members to thrive under, we’ll be ready and willing to discuss terms.”

As an avid fan, I can tell you that according to Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, GTA 6 should be out of harm’s way when it comes to SAG-AFTRA strikes. During a presentation in November 2023, Zelnick emphasized that the game is “totally secure” from any potential labor disputes. However, Take-Two declined to provide a clear answer when Inverse inquired about the possibility of GTA 6 being affected by these strikes.

If GTA 6 is nearing completion in its development stage, it’s possible that all necessary voice recordings for now have been finished. As we fine-tune the 2025 game and finalize the voiceovers for characters like Jason and Lucia, GTA 6 can be expected to carry on smoothly.

When Culture Crave announced the news, it promptly received a cautionary message from the community, despite gamers expressing concern. One concerned fan lamented, “Dude, we’ve been waiting years for this game. At this rate, I might not even be alive when it comes out…,” while another jokingly commented, “Well, GTA 6 is now scheduled for release in 2029.”

According to the report, games that were in production before the end of last year are exempt from the strike’s impact. Thus, GTA 6, which is slated for release in 2025, should not be significantly delayed. The length of the strikes is uncertain, but the prospect of returning to Vice City next year provides some optimism.
