GTA 6: Undead Nightmare concept goes viral

As a die-hard fan with a heart full of nostalgia and a mind constantly rewinding to the good old days of GTA, I can’t help but feel a twinge of excitement every time I hear whispers about the upcoming GTA 6. The anticipation is palpable, and the promise of stepping back into Vice City with Jason and Lucia has me eagerly counting down the years.

If you haven’t caught wind of it yet, GTA 6 is set for release in 2025. This highly anticipated sequel to the Grand Theft Auto series promises to be the largest video game ever made, and with GTA V setting records, expectations are already sky-high!

The outlook is optimistic so far, and even though we’ve been eagerly anticipating a second trailer since late 2023, we can’t wait to rejoin Jason and Lucia as they return to the vibrant Vice City streets adorned with neon lights. Fans are looking forward to seeing more of the signature Grand Theft Auto humor, while others hope for a fresh twist inspired by another beloved Rockstar title.

It’s possible you recall that Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) failed to deliver on its pledged single-player downloadable content (DLC). Instead, the focus shifted towards GTA Online, which turned out to be a lucrative endeavor, propelling GTA V to become the most financially successful entertainment product ever. Since then, we’ve primarily focused our attention there and haven’t looked back much.

If GTA 6 were to include single-player downloadable content (which we can only dream about), a user on the r/GTA6 subreddit has proposed an idea for a DLC called Undead Nightmare. By modifying the key artwork of Jason and Lucia and giving it a post-apocalyptic makeover, it bears a striking resemblance to The Last of Us.

If you haven’t heard, Undead Nightmare was a downloadable content for the 2010 game Red Dead Redemption. It presents an alternate scenario where the Wild West is infested with ravenous, brain-devouring creatures. Much like The Witcher 3’s Blood and Wine and Bloodborne’s The Old Hunters, Undead Nightmare is often praised as one of the greatest DLCs ever made.

To this day, it’s still shocking that Grand Theft Auto hasn’t fully utilized the concept and officially introduced us to zombies within GTA. Leaked files from abandoned GTA V single-player DLCs hinted at elements such as aliens, a narrative for Agent Trevor, and even zombies. However, these zombie elements never came to fruition in the final release.

“A fan is excited about the idea of GTA 6: Undead Nightmare and suggested that an official zombie mode for both the story and online version would be fantastic. They believe it could surpass all survival/zombie games forever, combining the best aspects from The Last of Us, DayZ, Days Gone, and Resident Evil.”

1st person added: “Currently taking in some unadulterated copium, but let me voice this thought. Perhaps, as we didn’t see cowboy zombies in Red Dead Redemption 2, we might encounter zombies in GTA VI instead

Of course, we’ve been burned before by GTA V. There are already concerns that the success of GTA Online and the temptation to keep flogging Shark Cards means we’ll never get a narrative DLC again, although insiders have claimed we’ll get multiple episodic releases about two years from the launch of the main game.

Just as some felt cheated by GTA V’s scarcity of DLCs, many share the sentiment that Red Dead Redemption 2 also fell short by not delivering an Undead Nightmare sequel. Nevertheless, if a next-gen version of Red Dead Redemption ever materializes, perhaps we could reimagine its Undead Nightmare expansion with a modern touch.
