It’s generally understood among fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that the Guardians of the Galaxy could have potentially defeated the Chitauri in the first Avengers movie, given their unique abilities. This assumption is based on several key factors throughout the Marvel universe. The Avengers, being the flagship team of the franchise, are set to face off against formidable opponents and even armies in their upcoming movies, “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars”, which will mark the culmination of the Multiverse Saga. Over the course of the Avengers’ history within the MCU, they have faced powerful adversaries and armies.
In The Avengers, the team overcame Loki and the Chitauri as their primary adversaries. However, in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it was the heroes who succeeded in persuading Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver to join them, ultimately defeating Ultron and his robotic troops. In Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, Thanos, with his Black Order and Outrider forces, posed a significant threat that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes managed to vanquish. Yet, in the upcoming story of Avengers: Doomsday, when Doctor Doom arises as a new villain, it appears that the Avengers may not be fully prepared to face him all.

Rocket Raccoon Told The Avengers An Important Piece Of Information
The Guardians of the Galaxy are an exceptional and tightly-knit group, bonding together more than the Avengers. They boast many intelligent and potent members, which is why it came as no shock when a deleted scene from Avengers: Endgame seemed to imply that if the Guardians had been present during 2012’s Battle of New York, the conflict would have been resolved much quicker. This doesn’t mean the Avengers erred in any way, but they lacked access to the crucial information that Rocket Raccoon provided in the deleted scene.

I really enjoyed Avengers: Endgame, as it contained one of my favorite stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The concept of the Time Heist was thrilling since it enabled Marvel Studios to revisit some of their most beloved characters, who traveled back in time to relive significant films and events within the Infinity Saga. Watching the Battle of New York once more was a delight, and an additional scene from Avengers: Endgame, featuring Bradley Cooper’s Rocket Raccoon showing how the Guardians of the Galaxy could have triumphed against the Chitauri in their first movie battle, added fresh insights to one of the MCU’s most iconic battles.
Following Black Widow informing Rocket Raccoon that the Avengers battled the Chitauri for a couple of hours, it’s evident that Rocket is taken aback by this information. In response, he sarcastically dismisses the Chitauri as the weakest galactic army. Curious about their strategy, he inquires why they didn’t destroy the enemy’s mother ship, to which Captain America explains that the Avengers weren’t aware such a tactic was possible. This means that the Guardians of the Galaxy could have used this information to swiftly defeat the Chitauri, something the Avengers lacked.
I Always Thought Gamora’s Presence Meant The Chitauri Did Not Pose A Problem To The Team
The Guardians Of The Galaxy Had A Valuable Team Member
Although it wasn’t clear if the Guardians of the Galaxy had the means to defeat the Chitauri by destroying their mother ship, I often thought they held certain advantages that made them more capable against an alien force compared to the Avengers. One primary reason behind my assumption was the presence of Gamora in the team. Not only is she one of the galaxy’s most lethal assassins, but she also happens to be Thanos’ daughter.
Initially, Nebula didn’t become a part of the Guardians of the Galaxy, but Gamora has been with the team since its inception. This means that one of Thanos’ daughters was always included in the Guardians’ ranks, and it was his favorite. As Thanos’ army, the Chitauri, were under Loki’s control to help him obtain the Tesseract for Thanos, Gamora was well-versed in all aspects of the Chitauri. Even if Rocket wasn’t aware that they needed to destroy the Chitauri’s mothership, Gamora would have known how to overcome them.
The Guardians Of The Galaxy Are Made For Fighting Threats Like The Chitauri
The Team Is Marvel Studios’ Premiere Cosmic Superhero Squad
Regardless of any insider information they might lack about defeating the Chitauri efficiently, I’ve always thought that Gamora, Rocket, and their team would have triumphed in the climactic battle of The Avengers, thanks to a crucial advantage. After all, the Guardians of the Galaxy, as their name implies, serve as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s initial defense against cosmic perils. While Loki brought the Chitauri to Earth with the intention of ruling the planet, they are an extraterrestrial race. Therefore, the Guardians of the Galaxy possess a wealth of knowledge and experience in dealing with such threats.
In 2012’s film “The Avengers,” Earth’s strongest and most strategic superheroes united for the first time. Although they were formidable individuals, they faced challenges in working together cohesively and countering an alien attack on Earth. Given these circumstances, it is not surprising that they initially found it difficult to combat the Chitauri. Yet, their ability to defeat them within just two or three hours speaks volumes about their resilience. In contrast, the Guardians of the Galaxy encounter threats similar to the Chitauri frequently, which makes them more adept at managing alien forces.
How The Guardians Of The Galaxy May Still Fight The Chitauri In The MCU
A Major Character Return Has Been Teased For The Franchise
Currently, Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom is slated as the primary antagonist in the next two Avengers films, with Thanos, played by Josh Brolin, seemingly deceased. Yet, the enigmatic Mad Titan may not stay that way for long. Given Thanos’ significant role in the comics’ Secret Wars event, a potential adaptation by the MCU is plausible. Moreover, Brolin himself has hinted at a return of Thanos to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In his own words, “I’ve heard through the grapevine that they’re planning on bringing him back.
Should Thanos reappear, there’s a chance that the Chitauri might resurface too. These extraterrestrial forces could be hiding in some corner of the Multiverse Saga, biding their time until their commander makes his return. This scenario would provide an opportunity for the Guardians of the Galaxy to demonstrate their prowess against the Chitauri, particularly since Rocket Raccoon, with his knowledge on defeating them, serves as the head of the revamped cosmic squad. Additionally, there’s a possibility that the Chitauri could invade from another universe during an incursion in an upcoming Avengers film, giving the Guardians of the Galaxy a chance to confront them.
