As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “My Bleak House, packed with spooky creatures, strange oddities, eerie props, chilling paintings, and costume pieces collected over the years, is fortunately untouched by the raging wildfires currently sweeping through southern California.
A quick update – Luckily, Bleak House was not affected [by the disaster], as reported by the director of The Shape of Water who won an Oscar. We personally transported over 100 items from our collection. Unfortunately, many of our friends have lost their homes. At present, we are assisting them. Therefore, I will be away for some time. The director dropped by Bleak House to inspect the property and express gratitude towards the first responders battling the fires. He also thanked everyone, whether they were friends, neighbors, or courageous firefighters, who were offering help, support, or encouragement in their efforts. Guillermo del Toro‘s statement is made amidst the rising death count in this week’s fires ravaging Los Angeles County, now at 10. Firefighters battling strong winds are praying for a break on day four of relentless fires that have reduced entire neighborhoods to ashes and destroyed over 10,000 homes and structures. Back in 2016, I was thrilled to discover that some items straight from Charles Dickens’ Bleak House were showcased in the LACMA exhibition titled “Guillermo del Toro: At Home With Monsters“. What a fascinating blend of literature and horror!
Among the intriguing displays were:
– A lifelike version of Santi’s ghost from “The Devil’s Backbone”, with what appeared to be red smoke emanating from a wound on its head,
– A colossal depiction of Frankenstein’s monster towering over a walkway,
– And the comic books that served as inspiration for Guillermo del Toro’s “Hellboy” movies.
In a 2016 article for LAist, Del Toro expressed that this location holds deep religious significance for him. He explained that the things around us are not merely artifacts or collections to him, but rather sacred relics or talismans. Regardless of what one might label them, they possess a spiritual grip on his identity.
Bleak House stands independently from another residence owned by director Guillermo del Toro, as his personal art collection had expanded so much that even a chilling Richard Corben painting hung near the kitchen became an issue. In an interview with LAist, he remembered, “My wife said, ‘That’s too close to the kitchen, the kids will be scared.’ A part of me broke and I thought, ‘I need my own space.’
