This summer in Toronto, Guillermo del Toro’s film school resumes with a series of lectures focusing on Canadian horror films, led by the Academy Award-winning director, at TIFF Lightbox.
From July 9th to 13th, the themed exhibition titled “From Rabid to Skinamarink: A Canadian Horror Odyssey” will guide viewers on a chilling journey through notable horror films from Canada, such as David Cronenberg’s second film “Rabid” (1977), Vincenzo Natali’s “Cube” (1997) and John Fawcett’s supernatural horror movie “Ginger Snaps” starring Katharine Isabelle (2000). The maestro will delve into and dissect the suspenseful elements that define these films within the horror genre.
The Mexican filmmaker will additionally dissect the workings behind Bruce McDonald’s movie “Pontypool” (2008), as well as Kyle Edward Ball’s first directorial effort, “Skinamarink” (2022), to discuss their unique visual and emotional influences on viewers.
Del Toro frequently considers Toronto as a second base following Los Angeles. Notably, this vibrant Canadian city has served as the production site for several of his films, such as “Mimic”, the Academy Award-winning “The Shape of Water”, “Crimson Peak”, “Pacific Rim”, “Nightmare Alley” and most recently, the Netflix rendition of “Frankenstein”. Additionally, Del Toro’s TV series, “The Strain”, was also filmed locally.
Del Toro’s close location to the Toronto Film Festival has fostered a strong relationship, especially since he often conducts his filmmaking masterclasses during the production of his latest movies in Toronto. Additionally, del Toro has previously presented lecture series at TIFF Lightbox, discussing topics such as Mexican cinema, Alfred Hitchcock films, and film noir.
The acclaimed filmmaker’s connections to Toronto go beyond just directing; in fact, many of his films shot locally feature Canadian actors not only as leads but also in key roles such as producers, production designers, costume designers, editors, and various technical positions. For instance, J. Miles Dale, a longtime collaborator, holds the position of producer.
This summer, I’m thrilled to be part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of a renowned film festival, as TIFF Lightbox and del Toro collaborate on an exciting outdoor screening of the captivating movie, “The Shape of Water”. Can’t wait!
