Acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro explains why his isn’t quite a horror film.
During his talk at the Cannes Film Festival, Guillermo del Toro revealed insights into the deep themes of his upcoming “Frankenstein” project. When someone inquired if it included frightening scenes, del Toro pondered for a moment and replied, “It’s an emotional journey for me.” He further explained that the film is deeply personal, exploring questions about fatherhood and sonship. Del Toro clarified, “I’m not making a horror movie – ever. I’m not attempting to do so.
Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming movie “Frankenstein” is poised to join a series of unconventional monster films that have made him a renowned figure in the industry, starting from his early works like “Cronos” (1992), “Mimic” (1997), “Pan’s Labyrinth” (2006), and “The Shape of Water” (2017). The foundations for “Frankenstein” were laid as early as 2008, when del Toro started creating the concept art for this film’s unique world. Over the years, the director has been candid about the challenges in bringing this project to life, which spent almost two decades stuck in development limbo before finding traction with Netflix.
