2023 saw the arrival on the big screen of two intense movies, Kill and Animal, featuring Ranbir Kapoor in the former. However, my personal opinion is that the release of this film sparked considerable debate due to its depiction of misogyny and violence. Interestingly, the producer of another movie, Lakshay, has recently come forward to defend their production, asserting that they steered clear of glorifying any violent or bloody scenes, while drawing comparisons with both films.
During her chat with Faye D’Souza, Guneet Monga expressed that “Kill for them” was an artistic expression, where they depicted violence within a tightly constrained setting. She particularly highlighted the discourse they’d had regarding the manner in which violence is presented and portrayed, as well as the way women’s bodies are represented.
Monga points out that in the movie Kill, viewers find themselves empathizing with the antagonists as well. She refers to a critique of Kill describing it as a film that “balances affection and disdain for its action scenes” while emphasizing the presence of intense action sequences and killings throughout the film.
As she explained, they managed to provide an engaging experience for the audience and expressed, “We didn’t emphasize or exaggerate bloody scenes; there were no slow-motion shots of blood, no glorification of violence. Instead, it was straightforward and confrontational, yet you found yourself immersed in the same environment. In essence, ‘Kill for me’ represented a unique artistic expression that we committed to.
41-year-old Guneet praised the movie Animal, describing it as an “immersive performance” and shared how it left her astonished during its screening. She pointed out that the action sequences were skillfully executed with excellent background music. However, she found the filmmaking style unique but didn’t agree with the narrative choice in the storyline, as she perceived misogyny in it.
She expressed her frustration at the frequent objectification of women, stating that for her, it’s about personal preference when it comes to storytelling. In her opinion, misogyny is unacceptable. However, she appreciates the action sequences in the movie ‘Animal,’ and finds the act of killing in a different league altogether, as she concluded her thoughts.
