During a chat with ETimes, filmmaker Uday Shankar Pani shared that Guru Dutt experienced financial difficulties following the flop of Kaagaz Ke Phool. He remembered an evening at Dutt’s residence in Pali Hill, where a traditional dinner with his wife Geeta Dutt was interrupted by workers who requested payment for services they had provided. This unexpected visit added to the already stressful atmosphere, underscoring the significant burden he was facing at that moment.

After the tense predicament, Guru showed exceptional poise. He told his wife to gather her jewels as temporary compensation for the workers, assuring them they would get the remaining amount the following day. Translated into simpler terms, “Guru Dutt, maintaining his composure, instructed Geeta Dutt to prepare her jewelry, stating, ‘Take this gold as payment at present, and return tomorrow for the rest’.

Caught off guard by the action, the workers declined the gold offer, choosing to postpone the resolution until the next day. This act of kindness from Dutt, in difficult circumstances, made a profound impact on those who witnessed it, showcasing his strength and resilience.

Pani explained that the fallout from the poor reception of Kaagaz Ke Phool greatly influenced Guru Dutt’s character. The strain of the film’s unsuccessful premiere caused a visible transformation in his behavior, as he grew more irritable and made those near him uncomfortable.
