Guy Ritchie in Talks to Direct Road House 2

The long-awaited sequel to the action movie “Road House,” titled “Road House 2,” is reportedly moving forward. Despite Amazon not revealing any information about the project at CinemaCon, a recent report suggests that Guy Ritchie, known for directing films like “Snatch” and “The Gentlemen,” is in negotiations to take over as director from Doug Liman. Will Beall, who has worked on projects such as “Aquaman,” “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” and “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” is penning the script for this film. If these reports are true, it would mark a reunion for Ritchie with both Amazon Prime Video and “Road House” actor Jake Gyllenhaal, following their 2023 war movie, “The Covenant.

Released last year, “Road House” was directed by Doug Liman, known for films like “The Bourne Identity” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”. The screenplay was penned by Anthony Bagarozzi (“The Nice Guys”) and Charles Mondry (“Doc Savage”). In the lead role as Elwood Dalton, we have a notable actor, while UFC champion Conor McGregor, Billy Magnussen (“The Many Saints of Newark”), Daniela Melchior (“The Suicide Squad”), Gbemisola Ikumelo (“A League of Their Own”), Lukas Gage (“Euphoria”), Hannah Love Lanier (“The Tiny Mighty Club”), Travis Van Winkle (“You”), B.K. Cannon (“Why Women Kill”), Arturo Castro (“The Terminal List”), Dominique Columbus (“Ray Donovan”), Beau Knapp (“The Lost Symbol”), and Bob Menery (“Billions”) all join the cast.

Stepping into the shoes of a film critic, I’d say: Redefining the 1989 Patrick Swayze cult favorite for today’s viewers, the latest take on “Road House” places Jake Gyllenhaal in the role of ex-UFC warrior Dalton. This time, he’s not just any bouncer; he’s a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse, a seemingly idyllic paradise that, upon his arrival, proves to be anything but serene.

‘Road House’ Was a Knockout for Prime Video

The reboot of the film “Road House” was a massive success for Amazon Prime Video when it unexpectedly debuted in March of last year, sparking controversy. The action movie drew in a staggering 50 million viewers globally within its first two weekends, breaking records and earning the title of the “most-watched produced film debut ever on a worldwide basis,” as stated by the studio. However, it received mixed feedback from both critics and viewers. Currently, “Road House” has a “fresh” rating of 60% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 52% from audiences on Popcornmeter. The consensus among critics is that the remake pays homage to the original’s emphasis on cheesy muscle over intelligent plotlines. In contrast, audiences found the remake to be a guilty pleasure at times (“so bad it’s good”), but overall felt let down by uneven acting and an illogical storyline.

The sequel to the movie “Road House,” titled “Road House 2,” was officially announced in May 2024. At the time, it was confirmed that Jake Gyllenhaal would reprise his role as Dalton, the former UFC fighter. Although Gyllenhaal has not shared many details about the sequel, he hinted that it will surpass its predecessor by being more expansive and larger in scale. He expressed his excitement about the project, stating that it will be “expansive” and “bigger.

Initially, it seemed Conor McGregor would reappear as the antagonist Knox, hinted in a post-credits scene from the initial film. However, following his conviction for sexual assault in a civil lawsuit filed by Nikita Hand, who claimed he raped her at a hotel in Dublin during December 2018, McGregor’s public image has become significantly more contentious than it was previously.
