As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of film-watching under my belt, I must say that I am both intrigued and skeptical about the impending remake of “Guys and Dolls.” Having witnessed numerous attempts to rekindle this classic musical, I find myself questioning whether this roll of the dice will finally land on a winning number.
The acclaimed filmmaker Rob Marshall is taking a chance with a revival of the classic musical “Guys and Dolls”. Over the years, numerous attempts have been made to bring a fresh take on this timeless story to the big screen, but it seems that luck may finally be on our side as Marshall has officially joined the project. Working alongside his long-time collaborator John DeLuca, they will pen the script in collaboration with John Requa & Glenn Ficarra, known for their work on “Crazy Stupid Love”, “Bad Santa”, and “Jungle Cruise”. Sony’s TriStar Pictures is set to produce this film, having obtained the remake rights from MGM, as well as the original short stories and Broadway musical.
In 1950, the Broadway musical Guys and Dolls became a sensation, inspired by two stories penned by Damon Runyon: “Blood Pressure” and “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown.” The story revolves around a pair of gamblers, Sky Masterson and Nathan Detroit. In a bid to acquire funds, Nathan strikes a wager with Sky, betting he can’t convince missionary Sarah Brown to join him on a trip to Havana, Cuba. Sky agrees to the challenge but finds himself developing sincere feelings for Sarah. As the story unfolds, we see that Nathan’s fiancĂ©e, Miss Adelaide, has grown tired of their prolonged engagement, which spans 14 years.
1950 saw the musical win the Tony Award for Best Musical, a title it still holds as one of the most outstanding American musicals in history. Previously, it was brought to life on screen in a successful 1955 film, featuring Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Jean Simmons, and Vivian Blaine in pivotal roles. This means that any future cast attempting to recreate this classic will have some impressive dance routines to emulate.
Will ‘Luck Be a Lady Tonight’ for the Guys and Dolls Remake
Efforts to resurrect the classic musical “Guys and Dolls” can be traced back to 2013 when co-stars and friends Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Channing Tatum expressed interest in the project. At that time, 20th Century Fox was developing the film for close to six years until it disintegrated following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox and its rebranding as 20th Century Pictures. Two years later, in 2021, Bill Condon agreed to direct, but he has since departed to helm an adaptation of the musical “Kiss of the Spider-Woman.
It seems fitting that Marshall is taking over for Condon, given that Condon was the one who wrote the script for Marshall’s previous musical, “Chicago,” which won Best Picture at the 75th Academy Awards. Notably, both Condon and Marshall have directed live-action adaptations of Disney animated musicals: Condon directed the 2017 version of “Beauty and the Beast,” while Marshall will be directing the 2023 adaptation of “The Little Mermaid.
Without a doubt, Marshall boasts an impressive resume when it comes to adapting Broadway musicals for the big screen. Apart from Chicago, he has also directed films such as Nine (2009) and Into the Woods (2014). Other notable works by Marshall include Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) and Mary Poppins Returns (2018). With his distinctive visual style, Marshall is poised to breathe new life into the classic musical Guys and Dolls. Now, everyone eagerly awaits the announcement of who will be cast in the pivotal roles of Sky Masterson, Nathan Detroit, Sarah Brown, and Miss Adelaide.
