‘Hacks’ Co-Creator Tells Crowd to “Support Comedy” After Surprise Series Win Over ‘The Bear’

As a longtime fan of heartfelt and thought-provoking television, I must say that the victory of Hacks at this year’s Emmys was not only well-deserved but also a breath of fresh air. The series has always managed to strike a perfect balance between humor and poignant social commentary, making it stand out in a crowded field of comedy contenders.

Hacks cooked up a major upset for the final category at the 2024 Emmys.

The Max series clinched the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series during its third season, making it their third win at the event. Competing in the same category were shows like The Bear, Abbott Elementary, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Only Murders in the Building, Palm Royale, Reservation Dogs, and What We Do in the Shadows.

During her acceptance speech for the accolade, Lucia Aniello – a key figure in our series – underscored the significance of humor. “Humor has immense worth, undeniably, to us, and we truly believe it can mend rifts,” she expressed. “When you share laughter with someone, you find common ground with them. Therefore, foster comedy. It exposes corruption. Indeed, it does, so encourage your local comedian.

In addition to the show’s co-star and co-creator Paul W. Downs, other speakers included who expressed gratitude for the crowd’s support. Notably, he mentioned that when the team first started working on the series, they weren’t sure if it would be successful because it focused on two female characters, one of whom was a stand-up comedy legend named Deborah Vance, portrayed by Jean Smart, who was over 60 years old.

As a gamer speaking up about representation, I can’t help but notice the disparity in age diversity on our screens. Around 20% of the global population are individuals aged 60 and above, yet they make up just 3% of the characters we see on TV. I yearn for more mature leads because, despite my youthful energy as a supporting actor, I long to take the lead role in compelling stories that resonate with older generations too.

In addition to its victories, “Hacks” was recognized as the best actress in a comedy series for Smart and as the best writing in a comedy series for Aniello, Downs, and Jen Statsky. The series, featuring Hannah Einbinder, garnered 16 nominations before the 2024 Emmys, making it the leading contender ahead of the event.

The victory of the best comedy series went to an unexpected winner, as many experts predicted that the FX/Hulu series The Bear would reign over the category for the second consecutive year. The success of The Bear in the comedy categories has sparked discussions on whether the show is too dramatic to be considered a comedy.

At the event held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, Eugene and his son Dan Levy, the co-hosts, playfully debated the classification of “The Bear” as a comedy.

During their opening speech, Eugene Levy shared that he understood some might assume they’d joke about whether “The Bear” is actually a comedy. However, staying true to the essence of “The Bear”, they decided against telling any jokes.

At the event, Laraine Newman, who was once part of Saturday Night Live, shared critical comments on social media regarding The Bear being nominated as a comedy. She expressed her disapproval by saying, “Each time I reflect on The Bear being in the comedy category for the Emmys, I feel like an ulcer might be forming.
