Hacks Season 4 Premiere Was Nearly Perfect – But Why I’m Still Concerned About Deborah and Ava

In simple terms, the fourth season of the critically acclaimed sitcom “Hacks” has been added to the 2025 television lineup. The premiere, split into two parts, was almost flawless. The story continues from where Season 3 ended, focusing on Deborah Vance’s preparations for her new late-night talk show. While I found the first two episodes captivating, I must admit that I have some reservations about the dynamic between Deborah and Ava in their relationship.

I Really Enjoyed Jimmy And Kayla In The First Two Episodes

Among the standout features of the initial episodes of “Hacks” is the outstanding dynamic between Jimmy and Kayla, whose acting pairing remains captivating. Now formally business partners, these two are striving to establish their agency, but finding a name for it proves to be quite a difficult task.

Amid Jimmy handling his contentious clients and Kayla defining her pet-and-baby focused agency niche, each interaction between them is a comedy masterpiece in its own right. Throw in their eccentric new agent, and it’s no wonder the show creators are contemplating a possible spinoff focusing on this unusual pair.

But I’m Worried About Deborah And Ava’s Relationship… Again

Despite Jimmy and Kayla being fantastic characters, Hacks truly revolves around Deborah and Ava, and it feels like they keep repeating the same errors time and again. Granted, it’s not entirely Season 4’s doing. The root cause can be traced back to the Season 3 finale, which opted for a dramatic cliffhanger (a choice I wish more showrunners would understand isn’t always necessary).

If you may have forgotten, Debora initially offered Ava the head writer position for her upcoming late-night program but later withdrew it once she recognized that her career could be jeopardized if the show failed. Aggravated by this, Ava opted to extort Deborah into granting her the job, which eventually occurred at the start of Season 4.

Deborah strongly dislikes being threatened with blackmail, so she makes numerous attempts to persuade Ava to stop or face dismissal, but all her efforts are fruitless. Ultimately, they both agree on a hesitant ceasefire to preserve the show and their respective careers.

If that scenario seems familiar, it’s because it bears a striking resemblance to what transpired at the outset of the last couple of seasons. I get why this pattern recurs as it sets up the most suspenseful season finale, but when the fresh installment needs to dedicate its first two episodes to resolving it, the initial impact of the drama gradually diminishes.

It’s unlikely that Deborah and Ava will remain angry at one another throughout the entire season because they are at their best when collaborating. Although they may continue to argue and exchange barbs, these exchanges seem more like friendly banter rather than expressions of intense animosity. The positive aspect is that they have already reached an understanding, effectively putting a halt to their feud, so it won’t be long before they reconcile and rebuild their friendship.
