Hacks Won the Best Comedy Series Emmy for Its Worst Season

As a film enthusiast who’s seen my fair share of comedy series, I must say that Max’s Hacks has truly captured my heart. The third season might not have been perfect according to Rotten Tomatoes, but it sure was a delightful ride, especially with its evergreen dynamic between Deborah and Ava.

Max’s “Hacks” is a cherished television series. The story revolves around comedy writer Ava Daniels (portrayed by Hannah Einbinder) and her complex yet rewarding mentorship with veteran comedian Deborah Vance (played by Jean Smart). Over three seasons, viewers have witnessed their ups and downs, moments of separation, and reunions as they strive to create the perfect comedy routine for Deborah. Remarkably, despite “Hacks” being incredibly captivating, it didn’t receive an Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series until 2024, when it was honored for its third season.

Interestingly, “Hacks” managed to secure an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series despite not receiving a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes – it currently boasts a remarkable 98%, with just one unfavorable review out of 43 total reviews. This isn’t too far off the mark, but you might wonder why “Hacks” won this season, given that “The Bear” was widely considered the frontrunner for the award. Let’s delve deeper into the reasons behind its success.

Hacks Has an Evergreen Dynamic

At the conclusion of Season 2, Deborah and Ava went their separate ways when Deborah decided to let go of Ava in order to forge her own path in the entertainment industry rather than relying on Deborah’s support. When Season 3 begins, it has been a year since then. Currently, Ava is working as a writer for a show similar to Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and has recently moved in with her partner. On the other hand, Deborah is enjoying success from her self-produced stand-up comedy special. Though they appear to be thriving, what they lack is each other’s company.

After crossing paths at a comedy festival, they find themselves communicating via texts once more, nine months since their last conversation. Deborah values Ava’s honesty over the flattery she receives from those around her, while Ava admires Deborah’s appreciation for her humor despite its inconsistency. With this renewed friendship, Deborah brings Ava on board during her break to help secure a coveted late-night gig, restoring the season’s momentum as they reunite.

The main pair, Ava and Deborah, truly elevate the show. Although other characters like Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) and Kayla (Megan Stalter) are also well-liked, the show’s success hinges on their chemistry. In fact, it’s this connection that keeps the show feeling fresh and engaging. This season offers even more delightful interactions between them, making the show all the more enjoyable.

Hacks Is Much More of a Comedy than The Bear

In its third installment, some critics argue that the series “Hacks” veers away from being a laugh-out-loud comedy or may not even qualify as one at all. A critical assessment of this season points out that the humor on the show has started to feel monotonous. The wit and humor displayed by Deborah, particularly her insult comedy, is deemed unoriginal, and her stand-up special doesn’t leave a lasting impression. The scene where Ava expresses shock at Deborah’s questionable jokes is considered a reliance on a cliché. However, this critique also suggests that “Hacks” falls short compared to “The Other Two,” a showbiz comedy, albeit one with a more eccentric and deliberately designed comedic approach.

As a devoted fan, I find myself in agreement with the perspective presented in The Vulture’s article, even though I must admit that I never found the show to be exceptionally humorous. However, what we both seem to concur on is that Hacks’ overreliance on humor has started to make the show feel a tad predictable. Yet, it’s important to remember that the blend of comedy and drama has been a staple of this series since its inception. Some might argue that the laughter helps the drama go down smoother.

Apart from “The Bear,” the series that many believe “Hacks” outdid to win the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy, is arguably less comedic in nature. Both “Hacks” and “The Bear” have been awarded a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series, but “Hacks” at least appears to fit comfortably within this category. On the other hand, “The Bear,” even acknowledged by the Emmys themselves, has not been known for its humor and the validity of its placement in the comedy genre is debated. It’s worth noting that both shows share a common challenge – they have one critical review each. However, “The Bear” has a significantly larger number of negative reviews compared to “Hacks,” totaling 111.

In 2024, the shows that received the highest ratings in the Outstanding Comedy Series category are Abbott Elementary and Reservation Dogs. However, it’s important to note that those who hand out Emmys are not necessarily the same as those who write reviews. For instance, while critics on Rotten Tomatoes may have deemed Hacks‘ third season its worst, it managed to excel in other areas. This is evident from its impressive audience score of 91%, which is higher than any other season and significantly better than The Bear‘s score that wasn’t even fresh. Additionally, the immense goodwill for Jean Smart has played a significant role, making Hacks a strong contender for the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy.
