Sony Pictures Classics have secured the rights to the upcoming film “Unidentified” from Saudi director Haifaa Al Mansour, who is known for films like “Wadjda” and “The Perfect Candidate“. The contemporary thriller in the Saudi language will be distributed across North America, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Turkey, Australia, New Zealand, and international airlines. Written, directed, and produced by Al Mansour alongside Brad Niemann, “Unidentified” is currently undergoing post-production.
Mila Al Zahrani (from “The Perfect Candidate”) and Shafi Al Harthi (of “A Woman’s Life”) feature prominently in a suspenseful tale. The chilling discovery of a teenager’s corpse in the desert ignites an investigation, as no one steps forward to claim the body. As a passionate admirer of true crime stories and having recently experienced personal loss herself, Noelle Al Saffan becomes fixated on unveiling the truth behind this tragic event. With time running out before the case goes cold, Noelle’s relentless pursuit takes her deep into a mystery set amidst a society undergoing change, where women are courageously advocating for more independence.
Al Mansour expressed his enthusiasm to work once more with Sony Pictures Classics for the launch of his new movie, titled Unidentified. In a statement, he recalled that SPC supported his debut film Wadjda, which centered around a girl yearning to ride a bicycle in a time when it was forbidden, even before cinema was legalized in the Kingdom. He is overjoyed about the opportunity to collaborate with them once more to bring another empowering female-led narrative to light, during an equally significant period of transformation in Saudi Arabia.
Haifaa Al Mansour, with her film ‘Wadjda’, emerged as one of the globe’s most captivating directors, as stated by Sony Pictures Classics. We are ecstatic to bring her latest production, the intriguing mystery-thriller titled ‘Unidentified‘, to audiences. This film seems perfectly suited for the current boom in the cinema market, and we anticipate it will be a significant triumph for Sony Pictures Classics towards the end of the year.
As a fervent admirer, I’m thrilled to share that this new agreement brings me back together with Al Mansour, following our triumph with the groundbreaking film, Wadjda. Notably, it was the first movie ever filmed entirely in Saudi Arabia and directed by a woman from the Kingdom. This cinematic masterpiece was chosen as Saudi Arabia’s submission for the best international film at the 86th Academy Awards, marking their inaugural entry to the Oscars, and it even secured a BAFTA Award nomination!
As a dedicated fan, I’d like to share that this captivating masterpiece, titled “Unidentified,” is a joint production of Al Mansour Establishment and Rotana Studios. It received valuable assistance from the Daw Program through the Film Commission in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The filmmakers were represented by UTA Independent Film Group and Memento International, while the negotiations for the deal were carried out with Sony Pictures Classics.
