As someone who’s been closely following Haliey Welch‘s journey from being a social media sensation to a crypto meme coin pioneer, I must say this recent turn of events has left me both surprised and concerned. It’s heartbreaking to see such a vibrant spirit entangled in a situation that seems far beyond her control.
Internet sensation Haliey Welch, famously recognized as “Hawk Tuah Girl,” has broken her silence after a gap of several weeks, expressing her thoughts following the recent plunge in value of her meme currency, $HAWK, just moments after its introduction to the market.
On Thursday, I learned that investors have taken legal action against the creators of $HAWK in the U.S. District Court of New York. They’ve accused OverHere Ltd., its founder Clinton So, social media influencer Alex Larson Schultz, and the Tuah The Moon Foundation of illegally promoting and selling an unregistered cryptocurrency. Interestingly, my friend Welch is not mentioned as a defendant in this lawsuit.
Meme-based cryptocurrencies are digital currencies that stem from popular internet memes or social fads. Their appeal lies in their humorous nature or the prospect of a lively user base, making them attractive to users. However, due to this same reason, they tend to be highly unstable and often perceived as having minimal worth.
On December 4th, when the $HAWK tokens were introduced, the meme coin reached a market capitalization of $490 million, only to plummet by an astounding 95% in minutes, falling below $100 million. As per accounts, investors collectively suffered losses totaling $151,000. The lawsuit further alleges that the team abused Welch’s popularity to promote the token, and it claims that insider trading and misleading promotional tactics were employed.
Following two weeks of no communication, Welch broke her silence on Friday, expressing her dedication to aiding those who have suffered financial losses. On X, she penned, “I view this situation as extremely critical and wish to speak to my fans, the affected investors, and the wider community. I am actively cooperating with and fully committed to supporting the legal team representing the affected individuals, as well as working towards uncovering the truth, bringing the culpable parties to justice, and resolving this issue.
I want to make it clear that I view this matter with utmost gravity, and I feel compelled to speak out to my followers, investors who have been affected, and the wider community. I am fully cooperating with my legal team and am dedicated to aiding them in their efforts to help those impacted, as well as contributing to the uncovering of…

In the wake of events, successful entrepreneur Mark Cuban has come forward to support Welch. During a conversation with Jules Terpak from The Washington Post, he explained, “She wasn’t entirely aware of what was happening. However, she placed her trust in the individuals surrounding her.
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Welch’s team and a rep for Betr Media.
