As a film enthusiast who’s seen more Hollywood films than I can count on one hand (and lost track of the rest), I find myself deeply troubled by the latest revelations about the X-Men franchise. Halle Berry, our beloved Storm, has been dealt a raw deal, and it seems that 20th Century Fox pulled some shady tricks to get her on board for X-Men 3.
Addresses the questionable conduct of Hollywood following director Matthew Vaughn’s revelation about the X-Men franchise. At New York Comic Con, Vaughn confessed that he left the 2006 film after discovering Berry had been given a fake script as an incentive to join the project. Halle Berry, who won an Oscar for her role, played the weather-controlling mutant Storm in the movie and it was her third appearance in the series. After Vaughn’s recent candid remarks gained attention through an online video clip, Berry shared her thoughts on social media.
As reported by ComicBook.com, the British director claims that 20th Century Fox deliberately crafted a script suggesting a larger role for Storm than intended, creating a misleading impression. This deceptive approach allegedly played a part in Vaughn’s choice to leave the film project.
They referred to it as “the Halle Berry script,” since she hasn’t agreed to it yet. However, once she finalizes her requirements and signs on, they plan to discard it. Upon hearing this, I was taken aback, saying, “Wow, you’re planning to do that to an Oscar-winning actress who portrays Storm? I’m leaving then.” So, I resigned.
In the movie X-Men 3, Berry starred alongside a distinguished cast that included Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, Anna Paquin, James Marsden, and Famke Janssen. Brett Ratner replaced Vaughn as the director following his departure from the film, which earned over $460 million globally. On October 5, Berry posted a video on X (previously Twitter) revealing some of Vaughn’s shocking disclosures, expressing gratitude for his actions in exposing the underhanded methods used to secure her participation in the movie. She accompanied the clip with the caption, “Sometimes you never know about the sneaky things happening behind your back!
Fans React to Deceptive X-Men Script
In response to Vaughn’s statement, fans on Berry’s post expressed passionate opinions, with user @KeyWatkins51299 stating, “Fox really mistreated the X-Men, especially Storm.” User @donlaurent92, alluding to the extended Storm storyline suggested in the fake script, commented, “They disregarded you, cheated you, and cheated us because that’s what we fans would have adored to see.” One fan argued that Storm, Cyclops, and Jean should have received their own movies, much like the 2013 standalone sequel, “The Wolverine,” starring Hugh Jackman.
Vaughn recalled that extra scenes were added to “the Halle Berry script” to mislead her into joining X-Men 3, including one where Storm rescues children in Africa suffering from a lack of water. After realizing the script was a scheme to deceive the beloved Hollywood icon, he no longer wanted to be involved with the movie. “Hollywood is really political and odd,” Vaughn said in the viral clip.
I entered one of the executive’s offices and spotted an X3 script. At once, I realized it was substantial. My response was, ‘What on earth is this? This… draft?’ But don’t fret about it. No, no, I’m the director. It’s the draft that concerns me. Enlighten me about it. He refused to explain, so I took it from him. It was a rather intense situation, but I managed to take it. Upon opening the first page, I found the title Africa, Storm. kids dying without water, she conjures a thunderstorm and saves them all. Well, it’s an intriguing concept.
Vaughn’s openness reveals some doubtful actions in the movie business when handling big-name celebrities. Berry’s character as Storm in the X-Men series grew increasingly significant, particularly in X2 and The Last Stand. Despite being lined up for a key part in 2014’s Days of Future Past, it was reported by Cheat Sheet that her pregnancy resulted in a scaled-down role. Berry’s partnership with X-Men director Bryan Singer wasn’t always smooth, but as her fame grew, particularly following her Academy Award win, Singer allegedly pushed for her comeback and an enlarged part for Storm in subsequent films.
In a 2022 interview with ComicBook.com, the mother of two hinted at a potential return to the Avengers universe in the upcoming film “Avengers: Secret Wars,” set for release in 2027. During this conversation, she voiced her interest in reprising her roles as Storm or Catwoman.
I truly enjoyed every character I portrayed, and it was an honor to be involved with such massive series. If given the chance, I’d gladly return to any of those roles.
